Hello,I wanted to start a new thread on these releases, focusing on opinions on the scores themselves. I received my package of Young CDs from Intrada today and am greatly excited to be discussing them at the moment. I finished listened to "The Tower" not long ago and that was a wonderful score, with one of Young's finest themes. The main theme is in the same vein as his theme for my favorite Young score (and my second favorite score of all time) "Flowers in the Attic," but of course, without the chorus and bells. With the chamber ensemble, various lovely synth effects, and the piano, he still manages to create a beautiful romantic coldness, which he achieved with "Flowers." I would love to hear the "Tower" theme performed by a solo soprano, or a chorus, with the ethereal celestes or bells...but the final waltz variation at the end more than makes up for that. Developing a theme into a waltz is such a beautiful and welcome idea. One of Young's finest scores!
Now, onto "The Core." The flip side of Young's talents, this is a BIG score. Some of it reminds me of the more action-oriented elements from his score for the "Invaders from Mars" remake. It's just nice, BIG, wall-to-wall action scoring. The main theme reminds me of Jerry Goldsmith, though it also reminds me of Mancini's "Lifeforce," just the sheer size of it. I haven't listened to all of it yet, but I'm looking forward to more.

Um I pretty much share your opinion on The Tower, however I think for the small size of the score, there needed to be something thrown in there to make it a little more interesting. Like a solo soprano or choir as you mentioned, or perhaps I was thinking of some exotic instruments. The way it is now every tracks is just too simular to the next. Theres no change in tempos, volume through out the CD, and I think some the extra things I mentioned above would have worked a little better. But hey at least its not a horror score agian! The Core is overall pretty good. It doesn't have a strong theme to me but its works. In fact it reminds me of a large bombastic rendition of a News show. Its sounds like that short little theme for NBC News.
But anyway its a generous release at 87 min long and as far as I know its everything that was used in the movie. And with it being free It doesn't make much sense for a consumer to complain much about it.
I was wondering. when this movie came out I had heard that the score couldn't get released because it would have been too expensive. So...is buying The Tower and getting The Core for free just a cover up? Is it secretly you buy The Core and get The Tower for free, and Intrada just can't market it that way for legal reasons? I noticed that Intrada never mentioned The Core coming with that Tower CD. Even after the secret came out before the release.Hmmmmm. It makes no difference I guess. I bought The Tower just to get The Core.

I bought The Tower to get The Tower. Wonderful score. The Core was a great bonus. Thank you Intrada and thank you Chris Young.

There's no cover up. THE CORE is not an Intrada product, it was made by Chris. Chris paid for it. He just sent copies to Intrada and other soundtrack retailers (not sure which ones) to include with TOWER or give away as they see fit. The intent was not to use it as a ploy to make sales on TOWER. In fact, I think there were some 700 preorders of Tower of the 1000 pressing run even before anyone knew about Chris' gift.My assumption is these won't show up on eBay, as if you were interested enough to buy TOWER, you're not going to part with THE CORE.
Under no circumstances should anyone have to pay to get a copy of THE CORE. If they show up for sale on any retail site, I'm sure Chris will get upset.
