Just wondering does anybody have any idea who's doing the score for sky captain, it looks like one of those movies, if done wright the score could be really great.

Ed Shearmur is doing the music, and from what I hear, he's doing it old school by writing it all with piano, pencil and paper. Williams, Goldsmith and Horner do it that way too of course, but it's still cool nonetheless. He's hiring a separate guy to do mockups for the director, but I believe Shearmur doesn't want to hear them at all, so that the first day of the scoring sessions is the first time he'll hear anything beyond the piano and what was in his head.

I personally can't wait to hear it!

I saw this trailer the material looked like it had great potential to inspire a wonderful score. I'm not sure if I will see it (probably not), but I like some of the designs of certain scenes. They reminded me of old propaganda posters for World War 2 seuged with Fritz Lang's "Metropolis." Looks like a film that should be scored by Shirley Walker or Christopher Young though (or how about Elmer Bernstein?).

Personally, Shearmur hasn't done anything I've greatly enjoyed yet, but of course I'm looking forward to what any composer will do with this material, so I hope he surprises me. The fact that he's composing it 'old school' makes it all the more intriguing.

NP: Dick Tracy (Elfman, and a truly magnificent score)

The only score of his I've heard is reign of fire, and that was a fairly decent score, hopefuly this one is a little better.

I love Shearmur's music, I was first exposed to him when I saw Count of Monte Cristo with my wife and the score blew me away from the opening scenes onward. Adding on The Governess, Wings of the Dove, Reign of Fire and Johnny English, all these scores have ranked high with me, all very enjoyable. Great melodic material, whether action, drama, romance or comedy.

Even Species II has some merit!

Looking forward to this one...Monte Cristo and Reign of Fire are two my more recent favorites.

I am deffinately looking forward to this one. I love his scores for K-Pax and Blue Streak. Of course he's done some other fantastic stuff but those stick out to me.

Shearmur is a major talent. This is one the scores of this year that I am genuinely eager to hear. That is... if the score is not rejected first.

Mr Shearmur said the score will be big and old fashioned. Expect a release by a MAJOR LABEL this summer. In the meantime check out the soundclips for LAWS OF ATTRACTION on the La La Land Records site. If you like his work you'll love this score. It's a wonderful romantic comedy score with great Irish tunes. The main title is very infectious. I dare you not to whistle it after one or two listens.

Listen to Johnny English, particularly the "Truck Chase." That definitely shows that Shearmur can write a big, fully-developed action piece--I'm really looking forward to Sky Captain, both the film and score.
