Remember the Royal Philharmonic Collection? First it appeared on what looked like the RPO's own label. Then it was recycled. Then again.

Today I stumbled across a bunch of titles from the third edition.

I got "Cinema Classics", the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis.

    Strauss: Also Sprach Zarathustra
    Jarre: Doctor Zhivago
    Rota: The Godfather
Rachmaninoff: Piano Concerto no. 2 (Adagio Sostenuto)
    Rota: Romeo and Juliet
    Lai: Love Story
    Mahler: Symphony no. 5 (Adagietto)
    Delerue: Rich and Famous
    Steiner: Gone with the Wind
    Barber: Adagio for Strings
    Jarre: Lawrence of Arabia

There's nothing spectacularly original about the titles featured.
It's still a great compilation of rerecordings. Gloriously played by the RPO. The players exhibit the type of nuance and virtuosity that most rerecordings can only dream of.
Well, if not amazingly, conducted by Davis.
Presented in a warm, natural acoustic with church-like orchestral balance and transparence with little apparent microphone gimmickry. Loud bass for the timpani, and loud brass over a cushion of warm strings, and lovely woodwinds.
