One of my favourite films and scores is Stanley Donen's 'Two For the Road' with Audrey Hepburn and Albert Finney. I saw it again last week at the National Film Theatre here in London and as always really enjoyed it. Fantastic performances by Finney and Hepburn, a great script by Frederic Raphael and a score by Henry Mancini which is just stunning. The music is not done justice by the RCA CD which is the LA rerecorded album tracks (the soundtrack was recorded in London). It is mainly source music and 'music inspired by' rather than the real thing.
I read a while ago that Intrada have the option on the original score. I e-mailed them this week to see if there is any possibility of a release in the near future and was told that the master tapes are lost but that 20th Century Fox are currently searching for them.
In film music terms, it would be a real tragedy if this beautiful music has ended up on some garbage heap.
If you like Mancini's 'Two For The Road' as much as I do you might like to join me in a mass finger crossing exercise!.
In addition to being a John Barry fan, you and I also have the strong admiration for "Two For The Road" in common.
I would LOVE it if the tapes were found as I feel Mancini's dramatic scores are terribly under-represented. While the commericalization of his music for films that made him so popular, it also made him less well known for the great dramatic scoring that he was good at.
My fingers are crossed too.
James
P.S. I'd love it if Fox would put that beautiful print from the laser disc on DVD along with the commentary that Donen did. It's a shame that hasn't been done yet.
Another Mancini score deserving a proper release is 'Charade' which I also saw last week. Some wonderful stuff by Mancini in that, much of which he felt was not worthy of an album release
You probably already know that The Thorn Birds will soon be released. Lovely score. Two for the Road was also quite lovely, and the movie was insightful about relationships. (Hepburn just glowed in Charade, Two For The Road, and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Wonder if she inspired Mancini?)
