Where should I put the CAPE FEAR rerecording by Elmer Bernstein into my collection? I have divided my collection into composery by alphabetical order and in teh composer-frame by year of its release. But now I donīt know where to put this cd, since it contains the original score by Bernard Herrmann from the fifties, but the adaptation by Elmer Bernstein is from the 90īs. Help?

    Thanks

    Philipp

    np: cape fear (bernard herrmann)

Well since the music on the CD was used for a film in the 90's, even though it was adapted, the answer should be obvious. I mean you would file it under the 90's. It would be the same scenerio if you were trying to catalogue Elfman's adaptation of Herrmann's Psycho for the 98 remake.

Of course I put mine in alphebetical order by titles only so I won't run into a major problem like that.

A person could lose sleep over that.....

I put my collection in composer order, and since Herrmann composed it my copy goes among the H's.

Alph. order doesn't necessarily work all the time however when you have a cd with two different scores on it (i.e. Patton / Tora! Tora! Tora!). I used to have them in alph. order, then I went with chronological order but I had the same problem, so I went back to alph order.

I have the re-recording alphabatized in my Elmer Bernstein section, although it should prob. be under Herrman.

You mean this discussion hasn't clarified the matter for you? Obviously, you create a new category, "Scores Re-scored by a Different Composer for a Years-Later Remake of a Classic Film" and put your Elfman "Psycho" and Bernstein "Cape Fear" in that section. Simple as that!

I think I sort my collection similar to yours, Philipp: Composer first, then release date of the film. I filed it under Herrmann, since he's the original composer, but chronologically within the Herrmann scores it goes under 1991. Makes sense enough to me, anyway.

My suggestion is to put it where I have mine: with Herrmanns stuff since its his score. John.

FYI: The original and superior film "Cape Fear" was released in 1962. The same year that Gregory Peck did "To Kill A Mockingbird."

I agree with Herrmann and if you must file by year also, go for 1991.

    James

P.S. There is also music from Herrmann's discarded "Torn Curtain" at one point in Bernstein's "Cape Fear" adaptation.

This is a topic of extreme importance.

Another age-old problem is where to file "Hoosiers" by Mr Goldsmith - does one put it under H or under B for "Best Shot" since that's what the movie's called on the album cover?

Does one file "The Egyptian" under Newman or Herrmann?

Does one file "Willow" under Horner or Schumann?

    etc etc

    Age old problem.

Yes, James. Herrmann must have liked those cues. He used them a lot. They are also in Battle of Neretva, mixed in the battle music. LOL. John.

I bought multiple copies, and filed each under a different composer:
    Schumann
    Prokofiev
    Janeček
    Horner
(not! the one Willow copy I have is filed under "W" on the soundtracks rack - alphabetical listing solved all of these childish FB problems about filing under composer, record label, spine colour, catalog number, year of release, film genre, performing ensemble, cover art illustrator, CD length, orchestrator, recording engineer or orchestra contractor)
