Is the "Spellbound Concerto" listed here the one he recorded with Leonard Pennario and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra? The only recording of the work with an actual theremin, played by the inimitable Dr. Hoffman?

This LP I have and it has some good recordings on it. The bass horns stand out in some of the cuts. Some cuts not real well performed though.

    John.

    dinko you're right

I was looking at my collection and I have Silva Screen 'The Epic Film Music of Miklos Rozsa' FilmCD170 with most of the music destined for his latest release due in late March 2004.

I also have 'The Film Music Tribute Series' Miklos Rozsa Film Music Vol #1 on Prometheus label PCD 122.

So I guess I may not need to buy the latest.

I have 'Spellbound' on an album called 'The Essential Miklos Rozsa - Ben Hur' Sliva Screen FilmXCD 334 - one of my favourite tracks is 'Providence' from the film of the same name.

So much so I found the CD on Cam's Soundtrack Encyclopedia CSE 085 - an aboslitely awesome experience in music

Kirk, this is the one with the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra, Leonard Pennario at the piano.

    The version I have,

    Warsaw Concerto

a 1980 recording with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, soloist Daniel Adni and conductor Kenneth Alwyn says in the liner notes.... "The weird, ethereal noise (of the theremin) is atmospherically employed in the concerto as heard in this recording"
Having sais that, there's no mention of a theremin soloist on the sleeve notes. It does sound great on the recording though and I cant believe that a synthesizer was used. It sounds pretty real!

Isn't this already on CD? On Angel Records, or something? (Or at least, some of the recordings from it.)

Bass Horn is a tuba or something like that. Deep horns. This particular LP is not on CD yet. Its an old Capitol LP. Some of the recordings are interesting. John.

firefox, this is not a community of musicians, and we're not all as smart or anal as others. I've heard the remastered CD and the original LP, and from a non-musician's perspective, I understand exactly what John Winfrey is saying about those horns... the bigger horns that produce a sound in the lower octaves of the horn family's dynamic rage. Bass horns. Doesn't take much logic, just a bit of creative thinking to understand the analogy.
