Seems orchestras told film music to get the hell out of their programs for next season. The Toronto Symphony released its new season last week. A load of Broadway concerts. Not a single film music composer.
Erich Kunzel conducts and celebrates his birthday at the same time. The New York Philharmonic announced its new season. A load of overplayed classical crap (Dvorak's Ninth Symphony), a load of classical stuff that's rarely played and deserves to be heard (Tchaikovsky's Manfred), and a load of new works that are bound to give audience goers a headache. No Williams. No nothing. Not even Broadway.
Unless it's part of one of the Time Warner Concerts in the Parks series. But those programmes have not been announced.Nothing in Philadelphia either. Nor in Minnesota. Unless you count the Leonard Bernstein concerts.

Not much in Detroit, although the Detroit Symphony will at least play Korngold's Symphony in F# which incorporates some of his film scores.
On the other hand, every single orchestra on the North American continent has scheduled a performance of Haendel's Messiah. WOOHOO! (

This reminds me of my post at the Toronto Symphony Orchestra's website -- you remember this, Dinko -- about Howard Shore and THE LORD OF THE RINGS symphony. Afterall, this is the city where Shore was born and grew up. You'd think the TSO, an orchestra with minimal support from the city in the first place, would take the opportunity to celebrate the most artistically successful composer born here and to draw in big-spending RINGS geeks... But noooo! What was the TSO's excuse this year?Ryan

Well this year they would have no excuse.Last year they claimed that it didn't fit their schedule I think. But even though that *might* still apply, the chances are minimal. Even if Shore doesn't conduct it, they could have found someone else.
You'd think though that the TSO would at least try to schedule it next season in the wake of all the Canadian media's attention on how "two Canadians won Grammys".
Howard Shore's name was heard in the news segments on CBC TV. When's the last time that happened?
But then... the TSO, just like every other orchestra around the world is too preoccupied scheduling Dvorak's Ninth symphony because Mr. Dvorak died in 1904 or something like that.

Shore should have called Conan O'Brien

Dvorak's Ninth is cool, but rapidly becoming ridiculously overscheduled for the 2004/2005 season as it's everywhere including in Dallas which is so far among the few orchestras to announce film music on their schedule.quote:

Well, it is too bad that the TSO isn't going to feature a LOTR concert...it does seem like a missed opportunity. Good thing I got those Montreal tickets for Feb. 23!!

If you don't want to wait for the TSO, there's always NACO in July:
