Releases like this make me wonder how much money Varese loses each year. They HAVE to be losing money on this release, no question.I refuse to buy this set at $130, and probably wouldn't buy it at $100 either. I echo the statements of many others on this board, and others: Varese may very well release some thing from this set in complete form in their "Jerry Goldsmith 75th Birthday Orgasmic Celebration" throughout the year and screw everyone who bought this set over.
And Joe, what "newbie", in their right mind, will spend $130 on 6 CDs that are only sold through the label's website? There is no logic in your statement whatsoever. Just think about it: soundtrack newbies probably don't realize the importance of the internet for soundtrack collecting. No internet = no knowledge of the release = no sale to newbies. Kind of defeats the purpose of the point you're trying to make.

If this is a year long celebration, I'm going to wait for the single disc releases of Damnation Alley, etc.If this never happens and I miss out, oh well. I just can't justify what basically ends up being a cost of $43 per CD.

Most of their releases have artwork from the film companies so they can do nothing about them - their re-recordings with original artwork tend to have beautiful, original paintings. I can't think of another record company that commissions paintings to use on its film music recordings. And beautiful ones, at that.[/B]
Maybe it's coincidence that my collection gives me the impression that Varèse is sometimes (not always) terrible with booklets. For instance the front covers of Tomb Raider 2, Predator, Dante's Peak and Outbreak are butt ugly in my opinion. But I must say that with this Goldsmith release they really produced a classy look.

I've been hoping to see a reply from Jeff Bond. I have always considered him an intelligent expert on Goldsmith's work and would be interested in hearing his remarks about this release...

I haven't made up my mind yet about the Goldsmith Compilation. While it would be cool to have the last three discs, I, like many others, have all the music on other discs. It looks pretty neat though.
What really worries me is that the Robe is selling out and I haven't bought it yet. I hope it can wait til Friday

I really, really want this, but it's simply not possible. It's true I buy many CDs, but I don't spend $130 on CDs all at once. I just never have that much spending money together at the same time, least of all when I'll have to pay for my next school quarter in a few weeks.I echo the sentiments that this would have been better as 6 separate CDs for part of a larger collection. Oh well...maybe if there are any left by May I can sucker someone into buying it for my birthday.

Again I must wonder, how many people saw The Robe was selling out and decided to get two copies so they could resell one later on ebay?[Message edited by Dinko on 02-11-2004]

I'm shocked too. I wanted one, and was going to order it with the Goldsmith compilation (IF I'm going to order that). And now I'll have to settle for a CDR.

Don't forget that specialty sites like Screen Archives still carry THE ROBE for a tiny bit more $$ than Varese's site.Ryan

I keep reading about how this Varese 6-CD set is costing $130 and $140.I'll have everyone know that the price tag on mine is $148 and some change. That includes California state tax (8.25%).
So tax and shipping charges are over $18.00!!!

Nope.
I e-mail Screen Archives yesterday and Craig informed me he is SOLD OUT on "The Robe."
Expect to find copies all over eBay in about a week or two.

I'm waiting until March as the damn thing isn't even ready yet. If it's gone by then...it's gone.

1,000 gone already? This is nuts. For me, half of this album would do nothing more than sit pretty and collect dust.

And I guess mine will too. But at least it'll collect MY dust, and not someone else's while I wonder if I should have bought it.

This makes me wonder if Varese, in the future, should consider order limits on certain highly desired club releases. Capitalism is great and all, but this could allow the people who REALLY want to buy and keep the music to do so, and prevent some of the eBaying that always happens on releases such as this.I still wonder if Varese has made any money off the $130,000+ gross they've earned so far.

I bought it last night. Including shipping, it works out at a scratch under £80 for nearly four discs of music I don't have (except THE CHAIRMAN). That's just over £20 each, which is pretty much the price of one Varese Club CD (or one FSM CD) plus shipping. And there are two further CDs of Jerry Goldsmith's finest as well. On balance, it comes out as worth having.Maybe the rapid sell is coming from collectors and fans, and maybe the rapid sell is coming from eBay speculators. Doesn't matter; Varese get the money anyway to invest in more scores from Goldsmith and others. And those eBay speculators aren't stupid; they're not going to spend $130+ on a set unless they know there are people who will pay them, say, $160+ for it. That would seem to indicate that Varese's price is even more reasonable.
Yes, it's a pain that sometimes these CDs come out at exactly the wrong time that some people can't afford them. But if they took much notice of that, they'd never release anything. I couldn't have bought this a year ago.

You know I was just thinking...what if this set has nothing to do with Goldsmith's B-DAY, They just say it does to spark interest in the fans and make'em feel all giddy inside so they feel like they just have to buy it? What if....it only cost as much as it does because Varese knows that this is about the time people starting getting thier TAX Refunds??!
Just a thought....But I agree with what you say.
