    GET READY!
    Date: 2/2/2004
Coming February 10 … a very special, mind-blowing, head-spinning, jaw-dropping, historic-beyond-words release from the Varèse Sarabande CD Club. We have a single offering … but it may be our greatest release ever. Interested? See you then!

    So let the guessing begin.

Good god, this must be something truly monumental. Perhaps a score that we have thought to be lost for years? I think we can expect great things.

It seems that Feb. 10 is Jerry Goldsmith's birthday, and folks over at FSM are CERTAIN that it's going to be some mind-blowing jaw-dropping historical best-release-ever Goldsmith set.

To which I say, "Huh"? What of Goldsmith's work could fit that description that HASN'T already been released?

The ONLY soundtrack recording I can think of that could possibly live up to the hype of that teaser is SPARTACUS. Complete. Stereo.

Of course, if we aren't talking a single score -- maybe it's going to be something so terrific that I can't even imagine it.

I'm hoping the date of release isn't a clue.

Goldsmith box set, most likely featuring some unreleased music from films like Breakheart Pass, Freud and the like.

It's been in production for some time and considering the date they are announcing it (the day of his 75th Birthday) it just makes sense.

    I can't wait!

If that's the case, then the hype is going to result in a major letdown.

Unreleased stuff from the leftovers of Goldsmith's scores already released on LP and CD do not equate to such hype.

    IMO.....

I think releasing a box set of music as a tribute to one of the greatest musical minds in the past 100 years is definitely worth some praise, but lauding it with such syrupy (albiet, somewhat sarcastic) hype is not necessary. Just release it and let the man's legacy speak for itself.

I'm hoping it's Spartacus but since it's Jerry Goldsmith's birthday and it's been reported that a label will be releasing a tribute for his 75th it makes sense that Varese will be the one.

Now if it's a 5 or 6 disc set with his unreleased scores to Innerspace, Gremlins, The Boys From Brazil, The Great Train Robbery, Freud and a Deluxe Alien, well hell ya that's worth the hype!!!!

Historic beyond words...doesn't sound like a box set to me. It's gotta be BTTF...it's got to be. Please let it be

If it is a Jerry set...still very cool and 75 years isn't anything to sneeze at.

Historic ... mind blowing ... head spinning??? I dunno what kind of release would do that to me!

How about a 10 disc set including, for example:
    Hocus Pocus (Debney)
    Squanto (McNeely)
    Timeline (Goldsmith)
    Haunted Mansion (Mancina)
    Agent Cody Banks (Powell)
    Godzilla (Arnold)
    Burbs (Goldsmith)
    Mathilda (D. Newman)
    White Fang (Poledouris/Zimmer)
    Rich Man's Wife (Newton Howard)

Or how about a 75 disc collection honoring Goldsmith's birthday?

    I think we're in for a disappointement.

    Sceptical....

remember the Varese announcement about NEMESIS... It was RAVING!

Nothing more than over the top use of words to describe a mediocre score by Mr. Goldsmith. And I am not bashing... I am a Goldsmith-fan..

But this is again nothing more than the use of marketing...

    Let's see...
Sometimes movies are announced with "The best action picture of this year"... It's summer... The year isn't over yet... HOW DA **** can you say that!?
    MARKETING..... It's sick!

The only thing that might live up to that description would be if Varese, through their affiliation with MCA, was able to put out the "historic-beyond-words" early Goldsmith score for LONELY ARE THE BRAVE. After that might be the unearthing of the long lost complete THE SATAN BUG.

(But I can't shake the feeling that what we're going to end up with is a multiple CD set that contains mostly previously released JG stuff with maybe a few scraps of unreleased material--but, surprise us, Mr. Townson!)

Exagerrated marketing sucks, but it sure works. Case in point - us fanboys ranting over here

I'm not much of a Goldsmith fan, and I'm not sure which scores or not are within Varese's reach, so I'll just sit tight and wait without making any suggestions.

On the 10th of Feb there are going to be some very happy people, some very disappointed people, some who could care less and some who are in the middle. It happens every time Varese releases their club CDs.

Of course Varese has from time to time put a little humor into their press releases so maybe Mr. Townson is having a little fun at our expense since we tend to think Varese over hypes some of their releases.

If it is a Goldsmith compilation I'm sure it will be well worth adding to my collection.

This is all funny. To make an announcement like that and then all the guessing. Why not just surprise us with the release instead of all this.

There are a lot of good things it could be. No idea, nor will I guess. Since its Feb 5th now anyway.

The club has been releasing many good things. I have several of them so far-Justine, Sand Pebbles, STuds Lonigan, Love is a Many Splendored Thing, Wonderful Country/King and Four Queens, Magic and so on. All are good too.

Whatever is Im sure it will be aok. J.

You know... I know this is never going to happen, and it doesn't parlay into this release announcement- but as Varese has ties to MCA... why the hell can't we get a re-release of the soundtrack to Smokey and The Bandit!!!

Seriously, I wouldn't mind if that were to hit CD at some point-- good childhood memories of that music and movie especially.

I have the LP to Smokey and the Bandit somewhere. It's probably the only Country music I'd bother listening to. It's one of my all time favorite movies, great stuff from Jackie Gleason.

Too bad the LP didn't have all of the different variations of Sheriff Justice's theme.

The guessing is more entertaining (and much funnier) than just waiting for the official announcement.

My prediction: It has nothing to do with Goldsmith; the Feb 10 date is a coincidence that has Robert Townsend slapping his noggin in frustration as we speak...
