Kirk,Although I do appreciate the compliment, I'm realistic enough to admit that my English-writing abilities are quite limited. So don't be afraid to correct me if you see ridiculous errors in my grammar or wrong choices of words.

That "still" had a spooky echo in it.
But seriously, Kirk - "an elephant never forgets and neither does Ken", as the saying goes; I have many fond memories of those times when we have agreed on a subject - and in addition, you're one of the most tolerant and cool guys here any way.
And by the way, you are a terrific writer yourself! http://hometown.aol.com/captecco/poems/poems.html

"people like me who haven't read the original books"Bingo, there you go... that's your problem. Why complain about the content of a series of movies which try to remain reasonably faithful to the books? You really should have not spent your money on theater tickets, but rather bought some reading material instead. You would have been more content.

Sorry Ken...I guess I misunderstood your comment "I've never followed the mainstream."Absolutely express yourself...my point with the "broad, sweeping statements" is that you go such lengths to describe your distaste for hype and that you don't follow the mainstream then your criticism of a film series such as LOTR just seems to lessen from my point of view.
For what it's worth, I thought LOTR was one of the first film that effectively used action to propel the story forward. There was a method to the madness, rather than let's see what idiotic action piece we can throw in next (ala Bad Boys II).
Bless Tolkein and LOTR, but the books have serious flaws in narrative flow, and in pure form are completely unfilmable. I have always given kudos to Jackson and company for retaining the spirit of the books while making the story accessible to the "mainstream."
Since you don't swim in the "stream" as the rest of us it does not surprise me that you didn't enjoy these films. Oh well, I guess its good to know that there are folks out there who did not embrace the movies as the majority of us did. Guess I'm just lucky that I did.

Bingo, there you go... that's your problem.Well, I don't think so. There are many great movies that can be seen and enjoyed WITHOUT HAVING READ THE BOOK FIRST. And if a movie is particularly good, it may inspire me to read the book which the movie was based on. Unfortunately, the LOTR movie trilogy does neither one for me.
KENPS. Right now, I'm reading P.L. Travers' MARY POPPINS books, trying to figure out why the character was so eccentric, almost schizophrenic, as also portrayed in Disney's version (which, by the way, has never charmed me, despite having a good message in it). In addition that these books may have been written under heavy influence of drugs of some kinds, I've also noticed where J.K. Rowling has had her inspiration to create her HARRY POTTER world... So obvious.
