I just looked at the 2004 Oscar nominations. It's interesting that over the years I have come to really dislike like Oscar nominated films in general. The only nominated film I saw this year was City of God. The film was a surprise nomination. The only reason I saw it was because I was traveling to Brazil for the first time and I wanted to see more of the culture. It was an okay film. Otherwise I stay clear of the films likely to get Oscar nods. I just find critics favorite films somewhat distastful. They probably aren't bad but I just don't have any interest in seeing PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, MYSTIC RIVER or THE LORD OF THE RINGS. They don't draw me into a theater.[Message edited by Aaron R. Brown on 01-27-2004]

THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING - ShoreWell that's the saddest pile of b.s. I've ever seen. It's like they did everything possible so LOTR could win. Why not just nominate Return of the King as a one-entry contender and screw the rest of this crap, at least it wouldn't look like a farce.

And imagine the global scandal if LOTR doesn't win.

Well it looks like you did, but actually you edited your message to show the COMPLETE list of nominees. At 5:49 you only had that Shore was nominated in 2 categories.
Wedge beat me by seconds with his post.

WHAT? No HansZimmzer?I recall Zimmer's PR machine make the claim that Jay Rifkin's lawsuit made Zimmer 10 times more valuable in Hollywood. Welp...
Jay Rifkin 1
Hans Zimmer 0
Howard Shore, congratulations. Let's have the Oscar awards tomorrow already. No need to wait.posted 01-27-2004 07:59 AM PT (US)

What the heck is wrong with you... It's not like Hans get a nom every year. And it seems that you keep dwelling in the past where no one cared. Walk toward the present, tortoise.
In other news, it'd be amazing to see Howard not win, just because.

I don't think Peter's post was so much about Zimmer as much as that moronic public relations release that followed Zimmer's countersuit. The PR nonsense claimed that Zimmer was now in a more favorable position than before Rifkin's lawsuit in large part as a result of Rifkin's lawsuit. Therefore, Zimmer he should at least have been nominated this year since he's become so important to Hollywood.
End result: Zimmer's PR person made an ass out of Zimmer. Zimmer's tenfold rise to respect following the Rifkin lawsuit simply makes Rifkin look better now that Zimmer hasn't even been nominated.

Erm, I was poking fun. No need to get all serious. We could have 77 threads on the topic for all I care.

Who said I was serious? I was just correcting a misconception.

The above example seems like me as a case where a significant role is recognised, even if the other aspects of the film have less 'artistic merit'.
I would think this would be the ideal - judging each award on it's own, rather than as a part or not of a 'good film'.
This ties in with the other thread discussing whether David got snubbed becuase his great scores are part of a not-so-great film (the Matrix Sequels).
