    Where are all the bets?

This must be the first time bets for nominations never took place. No one cares? Accepting ROTK as the winner already?

People! Have you lost your fandom? I am aiming this strike at both old FBs and younguns, so no one go blaming the other!

    Place your bets?

Yeah, I guess there are those types... "members" (plural) no less. Way to go, Bri-guy.

Somewhere along the journey of life, I found myself in a strange wood, for I had strayed from the true path. The poet Ebert appeared to me in a glittering raiment of naked intellect. I fell before the critic and pleaded for understanding on the question of Oscar chances. At length he provided me with this dark vision of the future:

    1. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban Trailer (Williams) - the Academy will be desperate enough to somehow get Williams a nomination for a year in which he didn't score a film. The redefinition of the category to include short films, including trailers, will doubtless catch many by surprise.
    2. Master and Commander (Gordon/Tognetti/Davies) - The Academy members are doubtless still wiping their eyes from GTD's beautiful score, particularly the piece they don't realise was written by Vaughan-Williams via Thomas Tallis.
    3. Finding Nemo (Randy Newman) - Academy members have so gotten into the habit of nominating Randy for Pixar films that they probably didn't think T. Newman was anything more than a typo, since R is next to T on the keyboard.
    4. Timeline (Jerry Goldsmith) - misfiled promo CD mistaken for the score of the film which Academy members didn't bother to watch.
    5. Pirates of the Caribbean (Alan Silvestri) - Bruckenheimer was so not expecting the Oscar for this ramshackle effort that he didn't bother updating the composer info on the submitted score CD. Little did he know Academy voters look at Amazon.com sales figures.

The learned Ebert then declared that the future was not completely known, and that outside chances included Clint Eastwood's score for Mystic River, the RZA's score for Kill Bill, and Steve Jablonskey's Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The reasoning that applies to 4 and 5 on the above list may also provide opportunities for unanticipated nominations for Basil Poledouris' Open Range, Mychael Danna's Hulk and the many other rejected scores of yesteryear.

The venerable critic made as if to go, at which point I fell to my knees and cried - 'But will you tell me nothing of songs?' The angel turned to me and shook his head, saying: 'I hoped to shield your ears from the most unfortunate of truths, for my bets for Best Song are with - something from 'Honey', either the two unavailable songs by Sting and Costello for Cold Mountain, Robbie Williams' version of I Will Go Down to the Sea Again for 'Finding Nemo: The Old Sea Urchin's Cut', James Horner's song Indie.Arie in 'Radio', and anything from the songs inspired by 'Mona Lisa Smile'.'

I was aghast, prostrate and protestate simultaneously, all at once. 'But what means this, cinematic sage? What of the music of old?'

    'It is forgotten, sensitive soul.'

    'What then must I do?'

'You must try not to care, young grasshopper. God knows (and has revealed to me) the voters don't.'

I then awoke in a pile of celluloid, thoroughly soaked in the tangible moisture of my own tears. Believe it, all who read. I had a vision of the future.
