Thomas Newman is one of the most interesting composers currently working. While there are definite styles that he composes in, his creativity and compositional skill keep his scores from ever getting too familiar.I decided that I would try to create a portrait of his musical output. I originally intended to make a single disc, but when going through the material to compile it, I realized there was no way that one CD could encompass the scope of his talent.
What follows is the track listing for the three-disc set I ended up with. Despite the fact that there are some scores which I wished I had room to include (such as Up Close and Personal or The Linguini Incident), I am very satisfied with the results not only as an overview of his work, but also as listening experiences.
I compiled "Ghosts" first. This was perhaps the easiest to put together as I had a pretty definite shape. I wanted to convey a sense of stillness that Newman creates so well.
"Bittersweet" was the next disc I put together. This is the one that I wrestled with the most in terms of what gets on the disc and what doesn't.
"Kinky" turned out to be the most fun to create. Newman's music can get so... well... weird, and I felt that in order to sustain interest throughout the whole thing I had to carefully structure the piece.
Another primary concern for all three discs was that the tracks flow together. This is something that Newman does with his albums, and I felt that it was a sound policy, given the nature of the music. I therefore worked very hard to get the crossfades just right. In many cases, it is difficult to tell where one track ends and the next begins.
I am very proud of these, and am looking forward to hearing what people think of these listings...

Overburning does work if your CD burner can do it. I use a Plextor, so I don't usually have any problems. Sometimes, if a disc is running too long (usually around the 82 minute mark) there can be some reading errors, but not usually.I don't overburn because I can (Ghosts, for example, is much shorter than 80 minutes), but I do take advantage of the feature if the compilation I'm making ends up a little longer than 80 minutes.
