Marc Shaiman Named Music Director and Conductor for Billy CrystalBeverly Hills, CA - Oscar(R)-nominated composer Marc Shaiman will serve as musical director and conductor for Billy Crystal at the 76th Academy Awards(R) Presentation, telecast producer Joe Roth announced today.
"Marc's significant talent is evident in the memorable films and television shows that he has worked on, as well as his Broadway musical version of "Hairspray," said Roth. "His contribution to the musical architecture of the 76th Academy Awards show will make him a tremendous addition to the production team."
Shaiman has been nominated five times for Academy Awards. He has received three Best Original Score nominations for his work: in 1995 for "The American President," in 1996 for "The First Wives Club" and in 1998 for "Patch Adams." Shaiman also received nominations in the Original Song category for "A Wink and a Smile" from 1993's "Sleepless in Seattle," and for "Blame Canada" from 1999's "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut." So how's Dame Roberts going to screw up Shaiman's name?

The material they do at the Oscars is often extremely corny, but Billy Crystal is a funny guy and For my money, the best of the Oscar hosts since Bob Hope. Just be glad they didn't invite Letterman back!A tip of the hat to Marc Shaiman also, a highly talented and creative composer who gets beat up quite a lot on Mr. Bond's message board (no fault of Jeff's, that). I hope to see his name more often on prestigious projects in the future, and will anticipate a better-than-average musical program next Oscar night.

They needed to make sure John Williams wasn't busy, seeing as he will be nominated (I know, no scores this year, but since when did that matter?) and might need to accept an award.Ryan

I guess Bill "Stickman" Conti got another gig for that night. Best of luck to Shaiman. He's a fine composer and fun guy!! The heck with Crystal......I think Martin Short in Full JIMINY GLICK glory should host the show....That might be very funny. piero2

Steve Martin was the best Oscar host I've yet seen--classy and far funnier than anything Crystal ever did. Crystal used to be hilarious but I think he was swallowed by his own ego. Marc Shaiman's a good guy though--let him host!

Steve Martin is just flat great anyway. Check out his appearance on the Carson show as "The Great Flydini" (I believe it's on the "Best of the 80's and 90's" DVD or tape that's part of the "Best of Carson" set). An incredible comic mind! Yes, I'd love to see him host the Oscars again.

Another classic: "You should've seen it. It was so nice. Some teamsters are helping Michael Moore into the trunk of his limo."

I really enjoy Martin and Crystal, but I also (and I may be the only one) love Whoopie
as an Oscar host. I love her sneaky, wry smile as she skewers just about any topic or
anyone. Acerbic is her middle name.

Christopher Guest as Corky St. Clair would be my ultimate host. He could wear a backwards tuxedo.Ryan

My favorite Steve Martin moment was when he brought some dip out to Danny DeVito, who was eating chips for a great deal of the ceremony.Billy Crystal as an Oscar host doesn't annoy me, but I think that's the best I can say about him. Marc Shaiman should be good.

Despise Billy Crystal, almost as much as Whoppie Goldberg. Next to Bob Hope, my favorite host is Steve Martin. I'll go back to not watching it.

Ok, apparently Shaiman's only producing the musical segments of the show and not conducting. Getting to be stickman for the first time is....quote:
