I'm just curious when most people here get to fully listen to a score when they buy one. Like, I've often heard people say they listen to scores when they're studying—personally, I need complete silence when I do work or reading for university. With a new semester starting, the only time I'll really get to listen fully to anything I buy will be while I do dishes or some house chore. Mostly what I do is just put in CDs and listen to the parts I most enjoy (which isn't long, 'cause of time constraints)—my brother, on the other hand, likes to listen to them full-way through almost every time (but, he's writing screenplays—so, that's understandable). To me, full album listens = dishes time.

Anyway, I'm sure there are people here with interesting things to say about when they get to listens to their scores!

I tend to listen... when programming, studying, travelling on public transport (turn up those headphones and shut out the cacophonous world), talking on the phone, and when I just can't listen, I play the ones I know really well in my head. As for the studying bit, I really need the music to make it more interesting than it is on its own.

I often work in a long span of time, so sometime I pick a nice CD that has some sustained energy so i could have it play over and over until I get tired of it. My recent choice is Johnny English which was entertaining and fun to listen to. One of my former choice is Spy Game. I was trying to play POTC but found that it had too much bass and chaos and became such a distraction. The Last Samurai also has got dozen of repeated play time while I was working.

I like to listen every time possible. I spend several hours each day surfing through the internet, and while doing that, listening is obligatory.

PS. What does POTC mean? "Planet of the Capes"?

Ah, hehe. I have been getting too used to seeing POTA. It clouds my abbreviation judgement.

My favorite times are when I am driving- I recently bought new speakers and an mp3/cd deck for my truck... so it is as close to perfect for me when I want to pump it up. It is really the only time I can enjoy the music- because, barring an accident, there are no distractions and can enjoy every nuance of the music.

p.s. my 4 hour drives to Ny when I visit family are a real treat...

sean, you've stirred my angst in these angst-ridden times when there's no time to concentrate well on anything for any length of time. I'm pretty stressed out most of the week with work commitments and running around like a blue-arsed fly. Got to get to the supermarket before it closes, got to do this, got to do that. Hardly time left to even think. Then there's the priorities question when one actually has "free time". Got to look up that old friend, got to write that letter to my cousin, got to have that beer with the boss, and even, yes, got to listen to that umpteenth CD that someone burned for me (though I haven't had the chance to really listen to the previous dozen yet). Got to watch that film I taped on video, got to look at the Message Board and see who agrees with me, etc etc.

To answer your question, I can't find the time. I can't "listen" to music when I'm working or reading or thinking, because I'm a terrible purist who hates that kind of wallpaper effect. I don't want my life overscored, and I think that if you're doing something else which involves brainwork, forget music.

So, not much chance to get through those 75-min jobs, but if I've got ten minutes spare, I'll pull out a CD and put on two random five-min tracks at random. This has unearthed treasures from scores I'd never really become acquainted with or had forgotten.

I'm really trying to slow down, to not cast my net so wide, sort of return to simpler times.

I listen many different times and many different ways. Many when I am unwinding or relaxing at end of day. Or, if I am in a mood to hear a certain score I will put that on. John.

Hey Graham, I know what you mean. Right now I have a total of seven essays I have to write for the courses I'm taking at university right now and some additional stuff to write for another one that I'm applying to for next fall, and I also have to prepare for several presentations that are coming up in three of my courses; that's all during the week, and so then on the weekend I have to work at night and have play hockey in the league I'm in—speaking of which, I broke my ankle (or severly damaged it) last night blocking a shot (I play defence) and so I'll probably have to go the hospital later today; I can't even bend my leg in the most minute way without pain shooting through me. Time is running out, and like you, I cannot concentrate with music on: I need complete silence. So, scores are pretty much on the outs right now.

    S.

Graham, your life sounds very much like mine, and I, too, yearn for a "simpler" life, with gads more free time to enjoy the things I love!

It's very rare that I will listen to a complete score, and like you, steal minutes at a time, whenever possible, to explore and appreciate. I'll pop in a CD when I'm surfing around on here, and I'll listen while driving in the car. But free time? What's THAT???

Hope you're back on your feet (literally) soon, sean. Funny, I think the last time I really had a chance to relax and drift with the music was the last time I was laid up in bed with fever. Too ill to even think about doing anything, but not too ill to listen to music. Really great time - the fever made me woozy and I lost all notion of time, really immersed in the scores. I recommend a good dose of fever for everyone.

Yikes, CAT, we're in real time! I just decided to leave the cleaning of the house till next weekend. Lay back and heard THE SWARM and THE FINAL CONFLICT instead.
