I haven't seen this up yet, so I'll start. I got the following for our late (January 6) catholic Christmas -TOMBSTONE (Bruce Broughton) - A truly hands-down GREAT western score! There are a few nods towards Goldsmith, Williams and even Horner, but this is no rip-off! Broughton's score is one of the best I've heard from him, every bit as good, if not better, than his wonderful SILVERADO. In fact, along with SILVERADO and James Newton Howard's WYATT EARP, this shows that there's still musical life in the old musical horse-opera genre. So much great music on display here. "Morgan's Death" is an absolute stunner, but it's ALL great.
DR PHIBES RISES AGAIN (John Gale) - Thank you, Perseverance, for releasing this. I suppose it'll mostly find favour with nostalgia buffs. A mixed bag musically (some of the horror and suspense cues are almost a pastiche of a pastiche), but at its best it's really beautiful. "Vulnavia's Theme" is rapturously lyrical, and put me in mind of Michael J Lewis' lovely theme for THEATRE OF BLOOD (though this predates it). I'll be asking Saint Valentine for Basil Kirchin's THE ABOMINABLE DOC P now, though I glean from the RISES AGAIN liner notes that director Robert Fuest wasn't entirely satisfied with Bazza's contribution (and indeed brought John Gale in to rescore some of it).
THE SEA HAWK etc (Erich Wolfgang Korngold : includes THE PRIVATE LIVES OF ELIZABETH AND ESSEX, CAPTAIN BLOOD and THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER, with André Previn conducting the LSO) - My first Korny, and very happy I am with it, though I haven't had a chance yet to scrotumize it to the nth degree. Great stuff so far, and the final duel scene for THE SEA HAWK is just amazingly thrilling. It even reminded me of James Bernard's fantastic music for the final Pete Cushing-Chris Lee chase in (HORROR OF) DRACULA. What may be more interesting historically is how one cue in particular from THE SEA HAWK ("Gold Caravan" on the Previn disc) is so similar to Hugo Friedhofer's ONE-EYED JACKS (Friedhofer was one of Korngold's chief orchestrators).

I've decided, along with many others on this board, to be a tad more reluctant in my purchasing of scores this year. Two Christmas presents which I've only gotten into recently:* Varese 25th Anniversary Vol 1
* Varese 25th Anniversary Vol 2 - disc three is incredibly good. I hardly knew any of these scores until I heard this.I'm also listening a lot to Blue Planet by George Fenton, and Long Walk Home by Peter Gabriel. Both offer rewards to multiple listens.

The Star Trek Album earlier this month.
Much better than expected, although The Undiscovered Country recording is particularly awful.
