At the ending of every year the inevitable discussion begins: "What were the best movies of 2003?" But the truth is that the best parts of some movies are in the previews preceding them. So I'd like to start a somewhat unorthodox discussion...so forget the movies...

What were the best trailers of 2003?

Troy sticks out in my mind.Another good one was the second Last Samurai trailer (contains some very interesting chanting music at the end montage and a unecessary, yet priceless shot of Cruise laughing hysterically in the beginning).
ROTK was very good...figured I had to say that

Trailers:Alien — The Director's Cut
(The alarms and sirens at the end really carry the suspesne and tension of the film, and offer an excellent change over from some huge score carrying the trailer to a climax—I could seem them foolishly thinking of "Bishop's Countdown" or something along those all-too-familiar lines)X2
(On the other hand, the use "Mars: The Bringer of War" in this trailer was excellent—I've never seen anything quite like it—and also the reversion of the "Riders of Doom" track from Conan The Barbarian also used on another version of the trailer was awesome and epic)posted 01-03-2004 11:34 PM PT (US)

I don't really know about the best...., the X2 one certainly stood out as a really good one.
I know the worst one, Peter Pan.

Anyway I'd have to say, hmm...Big Fish, primarily because it's got a great mish-mash of images and Elfman's Ed Scissorhands piece at the end, always glorious.
Troy, looks pretty epic, even though it seems with Peterson at the lead this could be pretty generic stuff. I like the opening shot, or DO I? I can't decide.
Hulk teaser was good stuff at the beginning, though it may have bene last year.

John C Winfrey: The Alamo?????!!!!!!!!!! HAHAHAHA! That's the dumbest thing I've seen all year! I hope you're joking—and I also hope they delay that junk indefinitely—geez, I didn't think anyone liked it: The whole theatre errupted in laughter. But hey, I'm Canadian. On the opening shot of Troy: That might have been impressive like ten years ago, but today it's just the same old stuff, so it's not that impressive. It's also dissapointing that the boring Gabriel Yared is scoring.

First of all, the trailer for X2 got me so excited to see the film (the shot of the cat licking Wolverine's claws at the end sold me).THE INCREDIBLES' trailer was funny. And the music (from ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE) was so good, I'm definitely considering getting the CD...and I've never seen the film!

Well Sean. Arn't we the optimist?I have to put in my votes for
BIG FISH
Elfman is amazing, and his work, especially scissorhands at the end, reallly helped add to the power of the creative looking film. Probably one of the trailers that got me most excited.PETER PAN
good trailer, good film, good use of Coldplay's "clocks"That's all I can think of right now, I'll get back to you as I remember more

Movie-List ( http://www.movie-list.com/ ) is having their annual Trailer elimination game this year (called Trailer Idol this year), and you can vote every day for your favorite TRAILERS.If I had to pick, I'd say "Harry Potter 3" or "The Polar Express"

But Jeremy, I have a big happy smile! haha! I'm comfortable with the thought that The Alamo is silly propaganda, and the trailer is something to laugh at—much in the way The Patriot (the Mel Gibson blood letting) functioned.

Mmmm... I originally though this was about the best music, but it turns out to be about the best trailer music, about which I have very little to say.[Message edited by franz_conrad on 01-05-2004]

Now, this topic is not specifically for best trailer music... I mean, if you want to announce it, that's cool. We're talking on the more general scale. What were the best trailers of 2003?Take it however you like.
For me the best trailers seem to be the ones that were most effective in luring me in (like shelob in Lord of the Rings
) to getting excited about their filmsposted 01-05-2004 06:35 PM PT (US)

The Matrix Revoulutions had a great use of JNH's Snow Falling on Cedars. Although I didn't actually watch the movie, the trailer was good.
Also Sky Captain and The World of Tommorow had a very good trailer. I'm actually looking forward to this movie! Any news on who's scoring it?

First, the trailer for REVOLUTIONS gave me one of the year's biggest laughs: "Mister Anderson. Welcome back." Hugo Weaving's delivery had me in stitches.
Second, according to IMDB, SKY CAPTAIN is being scored by Ed Shearmur.

I think you are refering to the choral music used near the end of the trailer. That was Trinity and Beyond composed by William Stromberg.

BTW, my favorite trailer this year was Big Fish using Elfman's music from Edward Scissorhands. Brilliant. Kill Bill was also an excellent trailer.

BTW, the worst trailer of the year was for the up-coming "America Saves The World" film "Miracle" which is the new hockey film based on the "Miracle on Ice" Check it out at http://www.empiremovies.com/movies/2004/miracle.shtml The film stars Kurt Russell as the late Herb Brooks. Anywho, I still have yet to see a good hockey movie... Slapshot is a classic but it's just plain goofy and The Mighty Ducks movies are just as bad as the team is... so I'm not really anticipating anything amazing from this film. Anyway, I'm still hoping that this one can stand above them all... but from the trailer the film looks like an over-the-top melodramtic film that is loosely based on actual events. But what really shits me about the whole trailer is that it calls the Russian/U.S.A. game "The greatest moment in sports history!" I highly doubt that. I know the USA players were a bunch of nobody's who managed to beat the Russians but that was just one lucky game. I don't even consider that moment to be the greatest hockey moment ever. And I also love the "flag waving" in the trailer... "Who do you play for?" asks Kurt Russell as Herb Brooks. The player answers "The United States of America!" Oh geez... come on!!!Anyway, I hope the film is better then the crappy trailer I saw.

Erik, I said it was a reversion of the Conan music, since the pieces are nearly identical. Anyway, where can I find this "Trinity and Beyond" thing you mentioned? And Miracle looks just as bad as The Alamo. I've come to think of the U.S. (or maybe it's a combination of Hollywood's perception and general American perception) as an insecure nation (even if they don't want to admit it)—meaning that American filmmakers are constantly asserting a revision of history with their films and romanticizing the most awful things, like war and racism, which, to the outsider, appears to be a way of hiding behind an awful truth about their country: America doesn't have a pretty history, nor is it black and white as so often it is portrayed. The nationalism in these films is stunning. It is both blind and jingoistic. Like Kurt Russell has this line in the Miracle trailer: "The name on the front of your jersey is more important than the name on the back of your jersey!"—the implications to today are obvious. I play hockey all the time, and this film looks dumb, and is probably a big disservice to the sport, much like Mighty Ducks (like, that wasn't even cool when I was a kid).

Ford says that a remastered Trinity and Beyond album with new artwork is coming, so I'd hold off for a little while.

I just watched that Miracles trailer...Yeah seems pretty lame, but I must say that I enjoyed it merely because Aerosmith's "Dream On" is such a great song and placed pretty well in it. Likewise some of the shots looked nice and inventive. : /

Of course you could just buy the DVD cause the score is on a seperate menu much like a DVD-A, but it's not in 5.1.

Hey I thought Mighty Ducks was good!
But I'm from Minnesota where it was filmed so it's some sort of law where I have to like it.Anyway, my favorite trailers:
1. Spider-Man 2 (Great use of the theme)
2. The Passion of the Christ (the one with Lisa Gerrard's music)
3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (Peter Gabriel's song at the end is great and so is the song the trailer opens with. Very haunting)
4. Matchstick Men (Gotta love any trailer with Brazil in it.)
5. Bad Boys II (Great use of Rabin music and then Face/Off for the big finish)
6. Once Upon A Time In Mexico (Juno Reactor, come on now! good stuff)
7. 50 First Dates (not a huge Sandler fan but it looks funny to me)
8. The Big Bounce (love the use of Somewhere over the Rainbow)
9. The Missing (Just kind of a freaky trailer over all)
10. Resident Evil 2. I'm not sure if this was released before or after the new year. But it's really unique. The way it starts out as like an advertisement for some facial creme then turns into this action trailer.
Close trailers:
S.W.A.T. for it's unique animated sequence at the end of the Teaser.
Big Fish had great music, but then the end of the trailer faded funny which made me think "hey, i could've mixed that better"
Terrible trailers:
The Butterfly Effect. Ok, how many times can we start of an interesting trailer with good music, and then ruin the entire movie because of some popular crap song? It reminded me a lot of A Man Apart (which was a crap movie but oh well)
The Forsaken. This movie just looks like crap.
Torque. I am going to cry. If this movie makes any money... the world of movies will hit a new low.
Clayton
