ORIGINAL MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK FOR THE CAT IN THE HAT
COMPOSED AND CONDUCTED BY DAVID NEWMAN TO BE RELEASED ON DECCA/UMG SOUNDTRACKS NOVEMBER 18, 2003

FEATURING AN EXCLUSIVE TRACK BY SMASH MOUTH
    “GETTING BETTER”

PLUS “FUN, FUN, FUN” AND “CLEAN UP” PERFORMED BY MIKE MYERS

(New York, NY- November 5, 2003) The soundtrack for this holiday season’s family blockbuster, Dr. Seuss’ The Cat In The Hat, is slated for release on November 18th from Decca/ UMG Soundtracks. Conducting and composing the original score is David Newman, while Mike Meyers contributes vocals on the songs “Fun, Fun, Fun” and “Clean Up” written by the Tony Award-winning songwriting pair Scott Wittman and Marc Shaiman (Hairspray). Multi-platinum selling group Smash Mouth also provides a rousing rendition of the Beatles’ “Getting Better,” available exclusively on the soundtrack.

A film for all ages, Dr. Seuss’ The Cat In The Hat also has a soundtrack featuring music for everyone. From pop band Smash Mouth to the whimsical vocals of star Mike Meyers, the disc is a perfect souvenir of the film. Smash Mouth frontman, Steve Harwell, recently told MTV.com that Mike Meyers was very involved in co-producing their track “Getting Better.” The band emailed MP3s of the track to Myers so he could weigh in on the end result. Smash Mouth also recently got together with Meyers to shoot the video for “Hang On” which also appears on the band’s latest album, Get the Picture? and is heard during the film’s closing credits. The band was able to join in on the fun by recreating scenes from the movie in such a way that they appear as if they are performing in one of the young character’s bedrooms.

Lending his musical talents to the film, David Newman composed a wonderful score that compliments the vision of the movie-maker, touching both children and adults. It is no surprise that Newman was chosen to score The Cat in the Hat given his previous work on such family films as Daddy Day Care, Scooby-Doo and Ice Age. Newman springs from an eminent musical family - his father, the late Alfred Newman, was nominated for 60 Academy Awards and received a record nine Oscars as head of 20th Century Fox's music department. His uncle Lionel was a conductor and music director and his brother Tom is also a film composer. Newman made his professional composing debut with the original score for Roger Corman's Vendetta, which was soon followed by Critters. He has also created music for the computer-animated short The Brave Little Toaster, as well as Amazing Stories, My Demon Lover, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, Heathers and Throw Momma from the Train.

The Cat in the Hat by Dr. Seuss was first published in 1957, and remains one of the top ten best-selling hardcover children’s books of all time. Mike Myers steps into the starring role bringing the mischievous, fast-talking feline to life on the big screen. Myers, complete with furry paws and striped stove-hat, unleashes mayhem in the suburban house where Conrad (Spencer Breslin) and Sally (Dakota Fanning) are spending a dreary afternoon while their Mom (Kelly Preston) is away at work. He takes the kids on an adventure-filled trip through a fantasyland that will never be forgotten. What begins as amusement ends in chaos ... until the Cat in the Hat has to clean up his mess before Mom comes home!

The Cat in the Hat was produced by Academy Award winner Brian Grazer and directed by Bo Welch, the Oscar-nominated film production designer behind such memorable and stylish films as The Lost Boys, Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, Batman Returns, Men in Black. A Universal Pictures/ DreamWorks Pictures/Imagine Entertainment film, The Cat in the Hat opens nationwide November 21, 2003.
