Picked it up yesterday and overall I found it one of Zimmer's most fantastic scores. Red Warrior is one of his finest and most unique action cues I've heard. The 2 themes are wonderful and Zimmer develops them nicely. Overall a really marvelous listen. Great job all around. Other thoughts?

Arrived in the mail today. I agree with you Jay Zee. Great score. Red Warrior is indeed a fantastic track.

NP Last Samurai (Track Red Warrior) ****1/2/***** (Not 5 'cause I generally do not give 5 stars - that would be perfect)

Suppose I get my lazy butt to a local store (a serious music store that is, nevermind Wal-Mart/Zellers/Future Shop-Best Buy), what are the chances of finding it on a shelf?

The Best Buy I bought my copy from had, oh, 20 (!!) or so on the shelf. Zounds!

I picked up a copy a few days ago and, yes, I totally agree. It's a great score. One of Zimmer's finest, and definitely the best thing he's done in the last decade (in my humble opinion).

Have any of you seen the movie yet?

If you haven't, it is 50% the reason I'm buying the score, the other 50% being that it is indeed good music. This rivals his work for Backdraft (which I hold in personal regard as one of Zimmer's best). It does this more so for me than Gladiator, etc.

But as for the movie- go see it and go often. It's by far one of the best movies of it's kind. A well-balanced script (shocker, since John Logan wrote it, and he's responsible for stinkers like Bats), humor, action, drama. It goes so far as to explain honor in the best possible manner.

    Well worth your time.

As much as I hate to say this, the Algren theme is getting on my nerve. And I need MORE. More TAIKO DRUMS and MORE of the full version of the Japanese theme in Idyll's End!!!!
It's intersting how many film reviews have referred to Hans's score as THUNDEROUS!!! Yet this album only suggests a few lighting strikes. I now want the complete score.

Interesting... My Best Buy had none. FYE didn't have any (surprising for such an expensive story). Gone to two Circuit City to find only ONE copy on the shelf at the second one.

The correct answer is: No chances at all.
None at HMV, none at Future Shop (aka Best Buy Canada).
No sign of Silva's garbagey Star Trek Album either.

Oh my god...my wife and I actually walked out of this movie after 90 or 100 minutes last night. I cannot believe this is Warners "Oscar bait" movie of 2003. It's a CARTOON! Terrible, dumb script (okay I GET IT, he's a burned-out drunk already!) and one of the few times I've seen Tom Cruise overact. Yes, this is from the writer of Bats and Star Trek Nemesis and it certainly shows...

Yeah, Dinko same problem here; even the Best Buy doesn'y have it, and Future Shop never gets anything (they've got like dozens of staff on the floor doing nothing, and wouldn't help you if their life depended on it). I did order it from this site, but I'm impatient and went looking for it here, as well.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but like, is it just me or does Tom Cruise sound really dumb in all his interviews talking about the "Bushido code"?

Hey Jeff Bond, what did you expect? This is from the director of Glory and Legends of the Fall! (IMO, two equally dumb films—and, Widescreen, what's the big deal with John Logan? He explains "honour"? So what! Jeff, does it also show that he wrote Any Given Sunday and Gladiator? I think, he ain't what he's cracked up to be) From what I can tell from the commercials it looks as if Cruise is just playing on the idea of "orientalism".

I enjoyed Gladiator for what it was and I strongly suspect that John Logan was not responsible for the parts of it I enjoyed (there were MANY writers on that film).

If Last Samurai had been a Jerry Bruckheimer summer movie I would not be so infuriated by it. But the idea that this is now what passes for an epic must make David Lean want to turn in his grave. Master and Commander is not a perfect movie but I found it infinitely more exciting, intelligent and better-acted than Last Samurai.

On the FSM boards? A bunch.
There's even a Media Ventures lunatic who makes any MV fans at mm.com sound like MV haters.

I'm a fan of Zimmer's Gladiator score. This one has some nice effects but nothing that really grabbed me; I prefer Gladiator. There is some nice romantic writing in Last Samurai. Let's put it this way--I'd rather listen to the album than sit through the film again!

This just in from the 2003 National Board of Review's Film Achievement awards:

Career achievement, film music composition: Hans Zimmer

All I have to say is "You've got to be kidding!"

There had to be a more deserving composer for a "career achievement award" than Zimmer.

I said my opinion about this score in other post.(my post heehehe)
    it's a good score,but not great score.Zimmer can do that better.Something lacks,something is wrong.
Tracks 1,5,6,7 and 9 are the bests for me.
Score and movie has a good reviews.Oscar for zimmer?
Anyone has original cd?there are aditional arrengemets?or additional programming?or both?
It's important because pearlk harbor cd has aditional arrengemets but in true was additional music.
    thanks

I just love that people find it worth commenting that something "doesn't matter to them." If that was the case, they why reply at all?

Then you must love it when people comment on the fact that, when people are "speechless", they'll still say "I'm speechless, I have nothing to say"
