Was anyone expecting THE ISLAND? A Universal title? That's the must-buy for me - even moreso than COMMANDO (and I'm pleased about that one as well).
Oh yeah, and there's something by that Newman guy....

I purchased my copy of The Robe ASAP. Only 1500 copies, yikes!!!!!As far as the other two I don't really remember too much from The Island, It wasn't a very good film and Commando is something I can do without.
The Island was Universal? Hmmm, maybe there is hope......

The Island! What a pretty main theme... then again it is Morricone.

Still waiting for Great Train Robbery, by the way...

I'm terribly excited about "Commando." It's a terrific Horner score that's long been a favorite of mine. Great action cues!!!

Don't read too much into the fact that The Island is Universal - Varese are only reissuing a score they'd previously released on vinyl, so there was no new licencing involved.Glad it's finally coming out on CD, though - it's a good score.
The Robe is, of course, a classic. I hope 1500 copies is enough! (Suspect it will be.)

At least now we won't have to worry about requests for 48 Hours - Commando is virtually identical, and probably the first major example of Horner repeating himself.

The most underwhelming batch in sometime.I was going to point out that "The Island" was released on LP (like the now-scarce "The Bride"), but James beat me to it. So much for "Back to the Future", eh?
Am I the only one who doesn't see what the big deal is about "Commando". Outside of the main title, it's pretty blah. I'm sorry, but someone had to say it.

I agree with SBD. I don't see the appeal of Commando. It's certainly no Predator. I was hoping for a deluxe Alien. It's gotta happen one day....

Wickenstein, I hope that Varese releases Alien as a normal "unlimited" CD. The sales of Predator and FSM's Omega Man hopefully show Varese that the Sci-Fi fans are out in full force.

For longtime fans, the release of COMMANDO is anything but "blah." This is an exciting score, filled with memorably percussive action cues. Now, if only Varese would get around to releasing WOLFEN...

>>Wickenstein, I hope that Varese releases Alien as a normal "unlimited" CD. The sales of Predator and FSM's Omega Man hopefully show Varese that the Sci-Fi fans are out in full force. There is a flaw in your logic. If a release is a normal unlimited one, that means it will be sold in stores, meaning there will be distributors and sub-distributors, which will probably take about 65% of the profit away from Varese. So therefore they'd have to sell WAY more copies just to make the same amount of money they would have if they released it as a limited-edition CD. And there might not be a big enough market out there to support such a release, or at least to make it as profitable as the label would like.
Just because THE OMEGA MAN sold out does not mean it would have succeeded on the open market because the profits would be reduced markedly for the record company. You mustn't forget that 3,000 - 5,000 units is minuscule in today's marketplace. Vintage film music is still a really small niche market and doesn't show any signs of growing as far as I can tell.

Well, it's still clear to me that 3,000 copies are just not enough for some of these titles. I have no idea if the demand is 15,000 or 3,001, but how is Alien less marketable than say, The Omen: Deluxe Edition or Legend*?The club is an acceptable distribution system for stuff like Beloved Infidel and Stud's Lonigan, since Joe 6-pack and Jake the Klingon aren't interested in them. I still think Alien, however, has a much wider audience than just score fans and that's why it shouldn't be released as a club item.
P.S. Where did that 65% number come from? Perhaps instead of having "distributors and sub-distributors," the industry should get their butt in gear and streamline their operation(s) so they can combat this massive amount of piracy that they keep complaining about with lower prices.
*I forgot that this was a Silva title, but I still remember the Varese Vaporware edition from about three years ago.

>>I have no idea if the demand is 15,000 or 3,001Believe me, it's nowhere CLOSE to 15,000. Universal will license some of their music out, but you have to pay them for a minimum of 10,000 copies. There is a reason no soundtrack labels have taken them up on their offer -- there's no way they're going to sell that many copies.
>>The club is an acceptable distribution system for stuff like Beloved Infidel and
Stud's Lonigan, since Joe 6-pack and Jake the Klingon aren't interested in them.Joe 6-pack doesn't give a damn about Alien either.
>>P.S. Where did that 65% number come from? Perhaps instead of having "distributors and sub-distributors."If a label is LUCKY, they might get paid $7.00 for a CD by a distributor, and it's probably less than that. The distributor makes profit getting it to the stores, and the stores have to make profit, too. Sometimes there are sub-distributors too, depending upon the territory or how the stores are set up. Nobody's going to work for free so a couple of thousand soundtrack freaks can get limited-edition items.
If it cost you $2.00 to manufacture the CD and pay your royalties (and when you figure in artwork, layout, and other costs, it's really more than that), that means you're making $5.00 profit on a single CD. If you instead sell it for $20.00 directly to the customer, you then made $18.00 profit on a single CD. So if you sell 2,000 copies at $18.00 profit, you've made $36,000 profit.
Using my above figures, selling in stores means your profit is 28% what it would be selling direct. That means it's 72% lower, not the 65% I mentioned earlier.
In order to make $36,000 profit at $5.00 profit per CD, you will have to sell 7,200 copies. That means you have to somehow find an extra 5,200 customers, and considering the average marketplace is probably only about 3,000 for a great title, it's going to be really close-to-impossible to find the extra customers. And I should repeat, it's not like the record label is making $36,000 profit to release a limited-edition CD. I'm just talking about the cost of manufacturing the disc and the packaging and royalties. Working on the project takes a tremendous amount of time and costs a lot of money, too. That $36,000 "profit" isn't really all profit -- a lot is to pay off a wide range of other costs. But I just wanted to simplify things so they could be readily understood.
>>the industry should get their butt in gear and streamline their operation(s) so they can combat this massive amount of piracy that they keep complaining about with lower prices. You are very ignorant of how distribution works. Even tiny labels with ten releases have to go through the same thing. You need middlemen to get these things sold to the stores, and as I said, none of those people or the stores will work for free.
The same happens with books and movies and any product under the Sun. That's why wholesale and retail are two different prices. It has nothing to do with the big record companies -- it's just the way the world works. I recommend you take an economics class or read a book about the business world.
