I haven't seen this up yet, though I may have gone blind. Forgive me if I have actually gone blind (though why should I apologize for my handicaps?)

    Two gems from FSM -

THE PRIZE (Jerry G)- Great great great. Why was JG so much better forty years ago? This is great! Admittedly, there are a few comedy cues that I still have to warm to, and I'm in two minds about his easy-listening romantic themes (which seem to borrow from Max Steiner's A SUMMER PLACE - stuff Goldsmith touched to greater effect in his brillianr score for THE STRIPPER, and revisited momentarily in MATINEE) - but THE PRIZE is mostly spiky drama, tension and action. Wonderful use of percussion etc.

And PLYMOUTH ADVENTURE (Miklos) - Fantastic, rousing score! Seven different themes! Beautiful canonic treatment! I LOVE Miklos, and this is one of his best!

    Another good month:

    1. GI JANE (Trevor Jones) - complete score. Very good - sort of does Media Ventures but remains inexorably Trevor Jones. Pity they always put little bits of dialogue on these releases!

    2. For love of the game (Basil Poledouris) - great melodic score. I tend to skip the electric guitar tracks though. The finale has some lovely choral writing that makes me wonder if its meant to announce the Second Coming or something.

    3. Batman Trilogy - conducted by Joel McNeely - RSNO - great sound and performance of both Elfman and Goldenthal's scores. The brilliance of the finales from the Elfman scores makes me wish this group had done a rerecording of Batman Returns. NOTE: Has anyone else noticed a similarity between Goldenthal's Batman theme and Shore's theme for Gollum?

    4. Batman Returns (Danny Elfman) - I love the themes for Penguin and Catwoman - there is curious pathos to the last performance of the Penguin theme when the 6 penguins come out and bear away his body!

    5. Matrix Revolutions (Don Davis) - something to remember this trilogy fondly by other than the greatest car chase ever filmed.

    6. The Score (Howard Shore) - good. A bit repetitive, but you can tell Shore had a lot of fun with this one.

    7. Dinosaur (James Newton Howard) - stunningly good. One of this composer's best?

    8. The Luzhin Defence (Alexander Desplat) - kind of overshadowed by some of the other scores I've bought this month, this one has the feel of a grower. The except from Shostkovitch's Jazz Suite makes me want to hear that Suite in full.

And the used bin yielded Lost in Space (Broughton - blecch!), Men in Black (boring), Holy Smoke (fantastic), Conspiracy Theory (unheard), Field of Dreams (Horner - great) and Jesus - the epic (no less) miniseries (Williams - easy to get overshadowed in this genre).

The Matrix Revolutions - in mono!

    Ivan the Terrible.

Plus a couple of CBC/Eloquence titles, one of them featuring an Imperial March recording by the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra.

Indeed. And when you do go for a recording of the complete suite, go for the one they used in the movie: Riccardo Chailly/Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra/Decca Classics. (aka "The Jazz Album" aka "Jazz Suites")

Some new clothes the details of which I'll not bore you with.

Ray Harryhausen An Animated Life - 35 quid and worth every penny.

    Indiana Jones DVD boxed set.

...and noticably absent...SOUNDTRACKS. I haven't bought a single score for Month's, there's just nothing out there that I really want, on the plus side I'm hardly wanting for something good to play such as...

NP : Jason And The Argonauts - Herrmann cond by broughton...I guess it's the book put me on this kick!

    1. Freedom Fighters (Jesper Kyd) - I like the way that he has mixed some grand choral pieces with electronic beats. Sounds tacky but I think that it's done well. Also some electronic-only cues as well.

    2. Hitman 2: Silent Assassin (Jesper Kyd) - Much the same except the use of an orchestra (mainly) to compliment the choral pieces. I like how the gameplay allows Kyd to compose some different styles of music based upon different geographical location.

    3. The Exorcist - (Lalo Schifrin et al.) - Good to hear Schifrin's rejected pieces on this CD. And Penderecki's work is a bit of a revelation.

    4. "Lead Us Not Into Temptation" Music from the film Young Adam (David Byrne) - I took a chance with this one and I'm just listening to this one now> First impressions are excellent. This is an almost melancholic score, sort of in the same vein as Howard Shore's Spider. There's a heavy reliance on violas and cellos. But there's also piano, drums, percussion, guitars and a church gate (apparently). Featuring musicians from Mogwai, The Delgados, Belle and Sebastian (I don't know who they are either) this is a good buy.

Oh, J.N.H.'s best award in my opinion goes to "Signs".

New for me since I got a less than part time job a couple weeks ago:

The Rocketeer by James Horner - Has some wonderful high spirited action music. The only annoying thing (Not counting cues sounding like other scores from him) is that there is a theme on there that sounds an awful lot like track 2, or 3 of Hercules: The Legendary Journey Volume 3 "Rebuilding" and I keep expecting it to go that way everytime I hear the cue.

PeterK, I thought you said not to mention boots and promos? i.e G.I. Jane complete - which ther person didn't mention, has some cues at the end from some other scores, including Loch Ness.

Yeah, dudes and dudesses, please refrain from including boots and promos in your listings. If you'd like to discuss the music from a boot, do it in another thread, but don't even mention it's from a boot.

Questions? Don't bring it out on the boards again. Please search for previous posts on the subject, or email me.

    Thanks kindly.

That is a good score, with some lovely themes, though I find the action material gets a bit tired by the end.

::embarrassed:: Oh, and apologies for that earlier ... indiscretion on my part. It won't happen again K.

Well, as a huge fan of Nino Rota and Federico Fellini, it appeals to me directly. I find it to be very addicting, and VERY beautiful in that Felliniesque sense. It's like having another Fellini score by Rota.

You can listen to clips here:

I bought my copy from Amazon.

Well, Macross Plus is an excellent score in and of itself (although I'm going to bet you have it already ).

If you like that style of music from the TV series, the music from any of the Gundam television series/movies are very similar. Zeta, W, Char's Counterattack and 0083 [Gundam Series] all have excellent scores. Make sure to buy the real imports and not the Taiwan boots though. www.animecornerstore.com only stocks "the good stuff" Its been years since I listened to any of it, but I think you'll enjoy.

I heartily reccomend Char's Counterattack to any film score fan BTW. It has a ton of great themes and some Goldsmith-like synths.

NP-Char's Counterattack (its been too long!)

    • Finding Nemo (Thomas Newman) - Came with a "coupon worth one cinema ticket (EUR 5)". My local English cinema's tickets cost 8.70 though, so since I already have the DVD, I certainly won't spend another 3.70 for watching it. Why can't they put those ticket coupons on scores I buy *before* seeing the films?

NYPD Blue: The Best Of Mike Post - Wasn't as good as I thought it would be. The tempo of the longer version of Magnum P.I. was a bit faster and ruined it.
The Rockford Files theme wasn't quite right. Can't put my finger on it.
    50/50 feel about the CD.

Miami Vice: The Complete collection 2CD - Jan Hammer - Nearly a 125mins of score.
But, sadly, like the McGyver promo it had long tracks that basicly repeated the same theme over and over again. Not many stand out tracks. And I watched the TV series. I know there was tons of good score. Big let for me. It didn't even have the one cue I remembered from the show. At least it had the piece from the episode where the guy in a whellchair reads the poem.
The "single" version of the theme was terrible.
Really took my by surprise that the CD wasn't what it should have been. Oh well.
    Another 50/50
