It's that time of year again, when Dan Goldwasser and Matt Barry make us all envious by hearing the ROTK soundtrack. For Matt's analysis and track-by-track soundclips, go to:
www.soundtrack.net/features/article/?id=110It sounds fantastic!

Some observations on this score that don't seem too unreasonable to draw from the 30-40 second clips:1. 'A storm is coming' - very sly introduction from the sound of things. I always figured the intro would feature the parley with *** SPOILER *** Saruman and the death of a certain character ***** END SPOILER **** to the strains of the motifs introduced in the second half of Isengard Unleashed. As that section has now been unleashed from the film, this could be place where the Smeagol/Deagol flashback appears.
2. 'Hope and Memory' - About 12 seconds into the clip we get a suggestion of the 'White Rider' motif from the second film, so I guess Gandalf, Pippen and Shadowfax depart at this point for Gondor.
5. 'The Steward of Gondor' - I love the ambiguous theme in this excerpt and the soft suggestion of both the Gondor theme and the motif that appears in FOTR:EE when Boromir and Aragorn talk about Denethor in Lothlorien.
6. 'Minas Morgul' - Good to hear the rising-falling ostinato again. The Ring is back in town indeed.
8. 'Twilight and Shadow' - sounds like a beautiful end to the trilogy of cues formed by 'Aniron', 'Evenstar' and this one.
10. 'Anduril' - great to hear the motif from FOTR:EE when Boromir and Aragorn discuss the Steward and Minas Tirith come into its own here.
11. 'Shelob's Lair' - sounds deliciously Shore-like. There are suggestions of The Cell here.
12. 'Ash and Smoke' - that blaring trombone followed by boy choir brings to mind what Elliot Goldenthal might have done with this trilogy.
13. 'The Fields of the Pelennor' - As Matt says in his notes, cues like this help you appreciate the thought that Shore put into the design of his music from the start.
15. 'The Black Gate Opens' - probably a prelude to battle rather than battle itself.
16. 'The End of all Things' - now THAT is exactly what I hoped for this scene. The orchestral fury at the end is glorious if you know what's happening here.
17. 'Return of the King' - nice hint of Aragorn's theme in the opening seconds of the cue.
The last two are too hard to judge from what I hear. My guess is the theme that appears at the end of the first two films is about to make an appearance as the 'Grey Havens' excerpt ends. 'Into the West' brings to mind U2's 'Hands that built America' and Nick Cave's song for Winged Migrations , and that can only be good. Well... Nov 25th suddenly seems a very long way away.

Awesome music! The orchestrations sound much more brilliant than the orchestrations in FOTR and TTT.

In a snotty, haughty Brit-like accent:
I most certainly would not.posted 11-09-2003 03:04 PM PT (US) Old Infopop Software by UBB
