The former Tangerine Dream-member has finally got a solo score-CD released.

I've just heard some snippets and it sounded very metallic and strange, but maybe it's interesting.

    Any opinions on this?

Will Haslinger get a breakthrough as a film composer?

    I hope not!
Underworld is worst peice of crud since Gregson-Williams' Phone Booth.
Its not even music, its just sounds put together to make a creepy atmosphere.

I will add my two cents to say that UNDERWORLD, the movie, was pretty mediocre. Just sorta...brooding and plodding, visually atmospheric, but none of said atmosphere really stuck to the celluloid, if you get what I mean.

The music was definitely a supreme disapointment in this movie. It is a lot of metallic shrieks (there's this one that you've heard in, like, 60 different horror movies, mainly during the 80's, I'm surprised they used that). It's just not very interesting at all. So much so that when the de rigeur aggro-rock/goth metal came in in a couple places during the movie, I was almost glad for something sonically energetic.

The only nice thing, if memory serves, was a Graeme Revell, et al.-ish cue toward the end involving the requisite huge choir, swelling theme, etc. But the rest of the movie's score is surprisingly bereft of theme and melody. I doubt I'd buy this, even if I found it used and I buy just about EVERYTHING.

This I will say for Haslinger though -- A.) didn't know he's an ex-Tangerine Dreamer, that's very cool, I like a lot of their movie stuff and B.) his music for BLUE CRUSH was decent - that I'd actually wanna listen to and might even own.

Yeah, about Phone Booth, that's a true film score. It did what it was meant to do... therefor it's good in my eyes.

FYI, the next issue of Music from the Movies will feature an interview with Paul Haslinger on his score for Underworld and his background in Tangerine Dream.

Agreed. The finale 'surfing' cue from that film is a nice piece. Though I shouldn't bring this up again, as I am sure to be taunted and teased by Shaun, the Magnificent Rutherford.

But now you you know that there's gonna be an article on him. The ad was effective in the least.

Well, Haslinger has worked as an assistant for Graeme Revell for some years, that's probably why some of the music sounded like him!

Looking forward to the Music From The Movies interview, although the Underworld score doesn't seem to be top notch. But Halinger is a talented guy, when he was in Tangerine Dream from 1986-1990 he was responsible for much of the melodic stuff, and he's a very good pianist, classically trained actually. He has also released 3 solo albums under his own name.

For those of you who are interested in Paul Haslinger, please have a look at my brand new interview with him at http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/feature.asp?ID=4

It's mostly about Underworld and also about his background in Tangerine Dream and with Graeme Revell.
