What compilations stand out as particularly good? Some nominations:Bernstein:
Elmer Bernstein by Elmer Bernstein (RPO Pops)Herrmann:
Bernard Herrmann - The Film Scores (L.A.Phil - Salonen)Rozsa:
Rozsa conducts Rozsa (3 volumes, never on CD)Williams:
The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration (Boston Pops)---
Are there any truly great Goldsmith compilations? I have the three made by Goldsmith, but I'm not fully satisfied with them. In particular, the arrangements (such as the cheesy "medleys") are lacking.

here are my favs-Fantastic Journey (eric kunzel)...one of my first purchases, it has a great rendition of The Last Starfighter.
-By Request (john williams)....has some unusual choices (midway) amongst the standards
-The Great Fantasy Adventure Album (eric kunzel).....this one has a great version of Willow, as well as the only take on the Terminator I can stand

In Session: A Film Music Celebration
(Varese, 2001)
Mostly conducted by Goldsmith, Debney or McNeely.I got this recently and am loving it. It's entirely re-recordings, which allows you to hear pieces from hidden gems, as well as popular favourites like Out of Africa and Jaws. The performances and selections are top-notch.

Charles Gerhardt conducts the NPO:Citizen Kane: The Classic Film Scores of Bernard Herrmann
Sunset Boulevard: The Classic Film Scores of Franz Waxman
The Sea Hawk: The Classic Film Scores of Erich Wolfgang Korngold
Elizabeth and Essex: The Classic Film Scores of Erich Wolfgang KorngoldOf the Goldsmith compilations, I've heard the Telarc one and the reissued "Goldsmith Conducts Goldsmith." The latter is definitely the superior of the two. Truly great? Nope. I think the Telarc album is way too infected with his 1990s stuff. I really wish he'd record a suite full of his best western music. The theme from "Voyager" gets added to the TV medley while really great themes like those in Hour of the Gun and Take a Hard Ride just fade away? Somethin' ain't right here! I know it's Jerry's music and he can present whatever he wants from it, but I'm surprised at how he ignores all of his western scores.
