PBS schedules are up now as well.
I'll catch the highlights when Vermont Public TV airs them on October 29th.

The Walt Disney Concert Hall, designed by Frank Gehry, will be the new home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Highlights from three consecutive evenings of gala performances feature Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen leading Stravinsky's Le Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring), as well as works by Haydn, Ives and John Adams. Special guests are Audra McDonald and others. Conductor John Williams offers highlights from the rich tradition of symphonic music in Hollywood.

Well, I don't know how much film music will be left in the program because whoever edits these music programs for PBS seems to have a hatred for scores. When John Williams conducts for Evening at Pops, his film music program is usually sliced up so that we can hear all of the lame random vocal talent on display.

Pretty good... I'm sure it sounded much better in the hall. Streaming sucks, but for those interested, I recorded it - I'm sure that's all we'll get as far as being able to "re-listen", at least for awhile. I took a picture from outside of my window - I live across the street from the Disney Concert Hall, and there's a very beautiful lights display going on at the moment. If anyone wants to see, lemme know, and I'll send you the pic.

You're blocking my view of Tom Hanks!

Do 'Planet of The Apes' and 'Vertigo' justice (like there's any doubt)

OK, Salonen conducts Vertigo way too fast for the first two cues, and then Scene D'Amour is so damn slow. I really dislike the way he conducted that suite tonight and on his re-recording for Sony Classical.

The cue from On Dangerous Ground (which a crazy on KCRW temporarily credits as being a Hitchcock film) mimicked Charles Gerhardt's recording of the piece.

I thought it was rather different from the Gerhardt....must be at least 50% faster, wicked brass!

Overall a very good concert, some excellent stuff. And Soundings seems nice too.

Soundings is great new work by Williams, reminding me great deal the atonal elements of CE3K. The performance was awesome and the sound itself so to speak sounded just fantstic. I particularly loved the fugue like progression at the last 3 minutes mark. This almost harkens to Williams Golden age period (i.e.the late 70's)IMHO.

I hope they issue a concert cd of the whole programe or even a DVD presentation someday. The Non Williams performances were first class all round.

    I love the internet!

    Excerpts from the SF Chronicle:

"Saturday's program began with another commissioned world premiere, this one from Williams. "Soundings," a gleaming, industrialized 14-minute essay, took pains to celebrate the new hall, especially in an electronic section that sent the sounds of a flute ensemble bouncing around the room, Tinkerbell-fashion.

Williams and Salonen then traded conducting duties as the orchestra went through a whirlwind history of film music, from Steiner's wonderfully pictorial 1933 score for "King Kong" to Bernstein's Coplandesque "The Magnificent Seven" and Herrmann's powerful music for "Vertigo."

There were some spoken introductions by Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Catherine Zeta-Jones -- delivered in the semi-robotic TelePrompTer cadences familiar from so many Oscar ceremonies -- as well as a handful of movie songs."

The flute and that other woodwind (clarinet?) solos kind of reminded me of Resphigi's The Pines of Rome

Well, at least a third of the Vertigo suite, On Dangerous Ground, and most of How the West Was Won (with credits rolling over part of it) made it into the program! I wonder if Jodie Foster was time compressed or if she really can talk that fast. Probably the latter.

I thought the "Soundings" piece mimicked the design of the theater. It's a huge mess with no cohesive elements to hold it together. There are also too many Catch Me If You Can-isms in it for my liking.

The good: Herrmann (at least the presence of his music, if not Salonen's reading of it), Newman, Jodie, Salonen, the LA Phil.

The bad: everything else. The Rite of Spring should be retitled The Rite of Hell. I cannot believe there weren't any better songs than those which ended up on the final show. The hall is as butt-ugly as ever, including the smashed organ. It was nice of them to give us the whole Rite of Noise suite, but only a short excerpt of the John Adams piece which sounded much more interesting. Lame.

Well, it's not as ugly as the one they're building in Montréal. :P

    Soundings is cool.

Thank goodness they aired the Rite of Spring complete. Adams' piece was too weird. And yes, Jodie does talk that fast, LOL
