Has anyone else noticed the extreme similarities between Fratres by the Estonian composer Arvo Part and sections of Meet Joe Black by Thomas Newman?

I'd like to believe that Newman had never heard of this composer or this work, and that similarities between the two is only a mere coincidence. However, I have a feeling that this isn't the case, and that I've instead been cheated on by yet another film composer.

NP: String Quartet No.5 - Tippett

I doubt Newman never heard of Part. But it could be a temp track thing.
Or maybe Newman just pulled a Horner.

I for one have only heard about Part, I've never heard any of his music.

Hey now! Horner only copies himself.... except for with Enemy At The Gates... and all the other movies he uses that same exact theme in (like in The Perfect Storm, Apollo 13, Titanic...)

I don't know, Part's a pretty well known composer. I hate to think that Newman might have strayed a bit close to the temp here, but given the film's troubled production and the extreme similarity between the Newman and the Part...

I'll charitably chalk it up to a rare and perhaps unavoidable lapse.

my question is, how can anyone be knowledgeable about classical music and NOT have heard any Part?

    get some CDs man!

Start with Te Deum and Berliner Messe.
He's worked a lot with the Hilliard Ensemble over the years, so there are quite a few albums worth looking into.

How many versions of Fratres are there? I know Telarc put out a CD ahwilw back that has no fewer than 8 different arrangements.
