Judge Dredd is probably one of the best sounding score CDs in my collection. Very nice score, too.

    The official releases:

    1. Jesus of Nazareth (Jarre) - Good contribution from Jarre - though I wonder if there was a lot more material in the 4 hour miniseries to support something other than a 30 minute album. Especially like "Three Kings" and "Miracle of the Fish".
    2. The Bank (Alan John) - superb mix of Hermann and Glass with some haunting vocals in the style of the medieval Church. The liner notes by composer Alan John are great for film score fans.
    3. Monkey's Mask (Single Gun Theory) - another Australian score for a thriller about the murderous world of bisexual poetry. Doesn't really deliver, but as it cost $1 US, I can't really complain. There are some good string-led tracks.
    4. SWAT (Goldenthal) - Go the evil guitars and the sinister track titles! The first 90 seconds of Bullet Frenzy are a masterwork.
    5. The Lion in Winter (Barry) - GREAT, all capitals. Now I just have to get Silva's Robin and Marian!
    6. Sinbad (Gregson-Williams) - very good. Probably not great, but then this one will probably grow on me. 'Sirens' and 'Syracuse' are standout tracks.
    7. Dead Poet's Society (Jarre) - found it cheap and it was worth more than every penny.
    8. The Good Thief (Goldenthal) - it took me a while to find the great Goldenthal score I needed to hear, but it is there. Some of the source cues don't work too well, but the opening piece is great.

    And the unofficial releases....

    1. Born on the Fourth of July - the complete score with many alternative tracks. Not cheap, but more than worth every penny.
    2. Mulan - ditto. Complete score with alternatives and a great bargain.
    3. Apollo 13 - 18 track complete score with alternative versions of the Main Titles, Launch and Landing sequences. Beautiful sound.

    NP Kid A (Radiohead)

Well, the copy of Citizen Kane with the broken jewel case at Barnes and Noble was mysteriously replaced by one with a good jewel case, so I bought it.

That's an insanely interesting list of titles. The Dancer Upstairs is a great score. I'm curious about the Nyman, Preisner and Sarde (part. Lucie Aubrac) scores in that list - are they worth getting?

I've been too lazy to post here during the last weeks. Time to start again.

    New today:

    • Amelie (Yann Tiersen) - After finally seeing the movie a week ago, I had to have this.
    • The Kiss and Other Movements (Michael Nyman) - the only work on this CD I already know is Water Dances. But it's Nyman - it can't be bad.

NP: Amelie (Yann Tiersen) - Actually, this does sound quite a bit like Nyman several times, too.

A couple of cheapos at the record fair today -

UNE FEMME FRANCAISE (Régis Wargnier film, music by Patrick Doyle): Lovely, elegant scoring from this great composer. The 5-min-plus penultimate track with the soprano voice is a standout.

CASPER (James Horner): When I'm in the mood, I still have a real soft spot for James Horner, and I'm glad I got this. Very nice, and good fun.

These scores are so good that my head could explode with the joy I get from them! They're simply marvelous!

Finally got some cojones and tried two scores by Herrmann: North By Northwest and Vertigo (re-record).

Also...rounding out the month and ending this psychotic kick I was on for October:

Hulk- This isn't too shabby at all!

Seven Years In Tibet- Sweeping theme, and some darn near flawless string performances by Mr. Ma.

Batman Returns- Plagued by a sparse orchestra, this score could have been soooo much more.

1492- Guilty pleasure In all actuality though, there are some very inspired moments all throughout this one. Color me surprised.

Dreamcatcher - Howard. This is a hell of a lot more diverse and interesting than I thought. There's a fair bit of suspense, but it's rarely droning or boring. Or maybe it's especially creative droning, but droning nonetheless, and I just don't want to admit it. I like it all a great deal, though it's a tragedy that the best cue - the air-raid attack cue - is missing.

Narc - Martinez. I couldn't get into Traffic and by God - this is volume 2. Listening to this I wished my head WOULD explode. The sound of 13 brain cells combusting beats this effort hands down. Uncreative droning and I'll be the first to admit it. I hope they don't release any more Martinez scores(unless they're like Solaris). This is torture. I want my money back. Just maybe - WATCH THE MOVIE FIRST!! Unfortunately so few scores get regular releases here, I get a little over-eager to purchase anything that DOES surface.

When I read that this score was a sort of mix of Phillip Glass and Bernard Herrmann I thought that I would give it a go.

Well after weeks and weeks of waiting for 1m1 to ship it, it finally arrived this morning. It's only on its first listen (and it's at work) but it is living up to my expectations. Quite Glass-like in places but it does offer much more for those not too keen on the out-and-out minimalism of composers such as Glass.

The finale cues - from 'The Crash' onwards - are pretty haunting aren't they?
