I quote the following from member dragon53 over at FSM. Not being a member I cannot post replies myself, so I bring it here:

I just heard on the radio that the MAGNUM PI movie has been given a "go" for production, but apparently without Tom Selleck and probably without Mike Post's classic theme. Selleck commented he's not involved with the movie. So if Selleck and Post aren't involved, it's not really MAGNUM PI....right?

First off, I really hope Mike Post scores it. I took a second to "" his name cause it deserves it.
His scores for the tv series "Magnim P.I." were great and some were lush and beautiful with some nuice action music.
Where's those private pressing and promos when you need them?

Secondly I want to add - The character "Thomas Magnum" can't be in the movie. For those who got the ending of the series ...

    [b]Possible Spoilers...

    He died.

    End Spoilers...

Now that can be left to speculation, but the evidence was overwhelming in my opinion.

I take it to mean that "Magnum P.I." will no longer mean the character, but rather someone of Magnum qaulity.

I wish some company would form and champion tv scores and pressure companies that don't want to go through the trouble to release them.

I can partener with them to squeeze their balls. ;-)

AS long as the movie isn't some blow em' up piece of garbage and doesn't have some annoying teenage punk in the lead rule, and an ACTUAL storyline and developed characters, I won't complain. Much.

As far as squeezing goes, I draw the line at Back to the Future I'm afraid.

I am about to lose it with all these adaptations of TV shows. There are how many others already given the "go"? SWAT ran for one or two seasons, yet here we are getting movies. Ugh. I like the Magnum P.I. character, but come on...they're even remaking Flight of the Phoenix.

The true apocalypse of film making will be when they remake the following:
    On the Waterfront
    Great Escape
    Star Wars
    Back To The Futre

God help the film industry. It needs a collagen injection of charisma.

    Hey Justin,

You might be interested to know that Billy Goldenberg likes Mike Post's television work.

It is. Sadly, if I can't rangle DUEL, than Magnum P.I. seems highly unlikely as well. :-(

He didn't die in the series. In the 7th Season he appeared to have died. In fact it looked like he was walking off into heaven. This was meant to be the last season and production was scheduled to fold.

The “final” episode got huge ratings and CBS decided to renew and Bellisarius and Glen Larson productions went into negotiations for a 8th and final season.

In that season, it turned out that he had merely been in a coma. So they did another full season after his supposed death that ended with him returning to Naval Intelligence, not death.

The only reason not use him in a movie is that he is probably too old for the part and that he doesn’t have all that much name recognition with the target demographic that actually goes to the movies.

I would strongly suggest everyone write to Harry Garfield and Kathy Nelson, the executives in charge of film music at Universal and ask why is it that they are unwilling to put out at least a comp cd of all the great television scores from guys like Goldenberg, Melle, Nelson, Cacavas, Colbert, Grusin, etc...

    Justin,

You can write to Mike Post and a slew of other composers c/o The Gorfaine/Schwartz Agency, Inc., 411 West Alameda Avenue, Suite 509, Burbank, CA 91505.

Also, go to their website: www.gsamusic.com

I tried Mike Post via GSA, to no avail.
I did some google searching and it turns out the series began with a different composer who also did the shows original theme.
Ian Freebairn-Smith, who currently hosts a classical music program on radio.
Also Mike Post co-composed the big fat majority of the scores with Pete Carpenter. From all the episodes I have seen, one shows Post co-composing with someone named Frank. Forget the last name.
Also additional score by Ron Jones and Velton Ray Bunch. Unsure if they were ever credited in the ned credits, but I did see an episode by Post that had a cue or two that sounded like Jones. great, now I'm thinking of Jones' work on Ducktales.

Additional, I believe it is the Hallmark cable channel that has been showing Magnum, p.i. is reruns since about the beginning of Janurary. Over here are CST, it is on at 5p.m. and 12 at night. After the 12 o'clock showing they repeat the 5 o'clock episode.

I forgot how good TV used to be. (Not counting Buffy The Vampire Slayer which is excellant in near all aspects...)
I really enjoy watchin it and posted my first chapter on a story on fanfiction.net.
I hope boxed season for DVD happen one day.

Tom Selleck IS Magnum. The movie is going ahead WITH Tom Selleck AS Magnum.

No way in heck will Mike Post get the job scoring the movie.

So until Magnum go into production, all is naught.

I think we will get a DVD box set if the show do go into production, as a way of raising further awareness of the name and the movie.

James Phillips, here is a sum up of the story of why I was banned from FSM:

There was a thread and in this thread Ford A. Thaxton was insulting people are usual. I made a comment or two, but that isn't what got me banned. I made some joke to Ford, not even insulting him. Purely playful and not harmful and I got suspended. I recieved an e-mail from Joe or Bill, I forget who and the individual was on a total power trip. Major ego a$$hole and basically said that I say he was right or something and he would consider not banning me. Needless to say the rude e-mail did NOT recieve the reply he was looking for and I was banned.
My old handle is still active for some reason. I posted with it a handful of times. Still could, but I don't get the joy I once had from that board. It sort of went down hill and the Thaxtonite is there.

When did this supposed banning occur? I have only banned two people as far as I know and you aren't one of them...of course, anyone who knows me would never accuse me of having a superiority complex...so...it must have been someone else.

    Whew...just what I need...MORE crap thrown my way...heh...

    Joe

P.S. It has been my experience that people who are banned are usually banned for a reason...and, of course, there is always the OTHER side of the story, isn't there?

I forgot. A few weeks ago I was watching an aepisode of The Simpsons, I think it was a new one on Sunday, where Homer holds up a boxed set of the complete first season of Magnum, p.i. on DVD Though it's never been released! Is this a sign? Does FOX own the rights to Magnum? Or is this wishful thinking on the series creators' parts?

I have really, truly been enjoying the scores episode from episode Monday - Friday on Hallmark Channel.
I hope one day a CD is released, well, more than one. There is just too much good music. Isolated scores would be better.

I saw an episode,in rerun, of "Magnum P.I." and Magnum died halfway through the episode. Then he helps this woman from beyond the grave. It was an excellent episode, but Magnum never came back to life at the end of the episode. Was this the final episode of "Magnum P.I.?" I certainly hope that if this is true that the producers of the movie won't overlook facts from the show like the people involved with the Star Trek: TNG movies did.

Magnum died on the series?? Hell I did not know that. Next thing you know, someone is going to say someone shot J.R. on Dallas.

    Any news on this movie?

Plus, on a related note, Magnum, pi is getting complete season box set releases.

Maybe that and the movie will coinside with 2CD set of score?
