Columbia Records Set to Release the Eagerly-Awaited Brand New Barbra Streisand Studio Record, The Movie Album

Monday September 15, 1:43 pm ET

Legendary Artist's 60th Album Showcases Best-Loved Songs From Films

The Movie Album in Stores Tuesday, October 14

NEW YORK, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Records will release the new Barbra Streisand record, The Movie Album, a personal selection of some of the artist's favorite songs from films spanning the years 1935-1988 (see track listing following). The Movie Album will be in stores Tuesday, October 14.

The new CD, Ms. Streisand's 60th album, features 12 brand-new recordings produced by Barbra Streisand. Ms. Streisand co-produced three tracks -- "Moon River," "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?," "Calling You" -- with Robbie Buchanan and one track -- "Emily" with the legendary composer/arranger Johnny Mandel. All the songs on The Movie Album were recorded with full-band accompanied by 75-piece orchestra(s). Arrangers on the album include Johnny Mandel, Jeremy Lubbock, Jorge Calandrelli, and Robbie Buchanan. The Movie Album is executive produced by Barbra Streisand and Jay Landers. The Movie Album includes revealing song-by-song annotations by Ms. Streisand, who dedicates the album "...to my friend, Gregory Peck, a screen legend who in real life possessed all the humanity and dignity he brought to his career- defining roles."

A special collector's edition of The Movie Album will also be made available for a limited time. The special package will include The Movie Album in its entirety as well as a bonus DVD featuring videos of Ms. Streisand performing "I'm In The Mood For Love" and "Wild Is The Wind" as well as an in- depth exclusive audio commentary with the artist.

Having received Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe, Cable Ace and Peabody Awards (among numerous others), Barbra Streisand is truly a Renaissance woman with her extraordinary popularity now in its fifth decade. She is the highest-selling female recording artist ever, the only artist to have had a #1 album in each of the past four decades. Consistently releasing #1 albums over a period of nearly 40 years, she has achieved the greatest longevity of success of any recording artist or group. Barbra Streisand has set a series of unprecedented sales records with her recordings: to date, 48 of her albums and 8 of her singles have earned RIAA gold certifications; 28 of her albums and 5 of her singles have earned platinum certifications; 13 of her albums have broken into multi-platinum territory. In addition, she has earned 5 gold, 1 platinum, and 2 multi-platinum certifications for her video releases. Her unbroken string of successes began when her debut album, The Barbra Streisand Album, became the nation's top-selling record by a female vocalist in 1963 and has continued unabated through the release of Duets, which was certified gold by the RIAA shortly after its release in November 2002.

A national poll by the Reuters News Agency named Barbra Streisand and Frank Sinatra as the favorite female and male singers of the last century while the RIAA confirmed her status as the leading female recording artist of the 20th century.

Now naturally I wouldn't be interested in something like this. But why would anyone hate Barbra Streisand? I liked some of her songs from the 80s, and I'm pretty sure she can sing
about 10 better than Brittneyy Spears.

    WHA...? No William Ross?

Given that Ross has been conducting, arranging and producing for Babs since 1993, it's weird to read that he may not be involved in a film music related project. Or that he's not popular enough to be included in the above list of 'dignitaries'.
Frankly, except Jeremy Lubbock, I can't stand the arrangements of any of the other three, so that's even more disappointing.

Oh well... just another crappy Babs disc to add to the collection. Guess it can't really get any worse following her icky A love like ours and her second Christmas album which sounded more funeral music than a 'celebration'.

10 better? 'Britty' can't even sing to begin with. Comparing something with nothing is an undefined concept. Like 16 divided by 0.

Japanese does not allow for such juxtaposition of consonants.

It should be something like Barubaru, Roberutu, Samitu, ulatara leonarodu malotinu.

Then I can can only conclude that you think that the authors of the song don't speak (or write) Japanese. Interesting. But, as Mecha Streisand is obviously a Japanese monster and the singer of the song was clearly intended to represent a person who does speak (or sing) Japanese, your inference must be faulty! Faulty, I say!

    Chichi?

Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Barbara Streisand...

Come on! sing it all with me people!

God, I hate songs. I hate 95% of all songs I have heard. No wonder 99% of the time when I pop a CD in it is a score CD.

The best songs were written in the 70s and 80s. Very VERY few good songs came from the 90s.

Got this frisbee today. Probably should have bought a Prague CD instead.

Most of the songs suck. Just notes in the air, with lame melodies, if you can even call them melodies.
The arrangements are mostly bland and simplistic.
It's all in a slow semi-jazzy mood, and it just drones on and on, and never seems to exit its lameness.
Babs says Previn's 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse theme is probably the best theme she's ever heard. That's fine. Except the album sucks in itself. When one thinks about all the great themes out there, it makes this album even worse.

The version I was sent came with a short DVD and an additional 6-minute CD with Barbra comments. Pretty much all of the CD comments find their way on the DVD.

A good portion of the liner notes talk about popular movie themes like Gone with the Wind, except nothing on the disc itself comes anywhere near the Gone with the Wind theme.

It's stinker, and a big one at that.

Who wants smelly junk from the front and the rear?

Rejoice ye multichannel fans, for the suckiest Streisand album is her first SACD.
    http://www.highfidelityreview.com/news/news.asp?newsnumber=15334206

    quote:

Sony Announces First Barbara Streisand SACD
In addition to the Kelly Rowland SACD release and the SACD sales news, Sony Music has announced that the first SACD from Barbara Streisand is planned for release later this year. The SACD release will be Streisand's newest album "The Movie Album".

The album features Streisand performing 12 well known movie songs backed by a 75 piece orchestra. Nine of the 12 songs on the album "were entirely recorded live with no overdubs". For the album's SACD release, Streisand engineer David Reitzas created a new 5.1 Surround Sound mix using Pro Tools HD at 24 bit, 96kHz resolution with Digidesign converters.

No official release date for the Surround Sound SACD edition of "The Movie Album" has been set. But I have been told that it could be on the market as soon as sometime next month.

Why is it that except in the classical music department, almost everything released on both DVDA and SACD is garbage?

ohohoh! IWANQT ENGLISHU PATIENT IN SACDSURROUND!!THAT VOULDBE SOOOC OOL!!

I guess it is supposed to do that. Other albums have made the same claim.
It must be really hard to sing bad songs with an orchestra behind you. Imagine all those LA studio musicians who have played Goldsmith and Williams scores; who know the type of tune that can be produced by Hollywood composers.
The poor musicians suddenly have to play second rate arrangements on some below average movie songs. At least they got their AFM pay check.
