Just bought both these movies on DVD for the bargain price of £4:50 each. I haven't seen either film for 20 years so it will be interesting to see how well they've aged over time.
Both would seem to have topical subjects still pertinent in some way today. The hunt for witches could be taken metaphorically as the hunting down and scapegoating of individuals through the media etc. After all, Matthew Hopkin's motivations for torturing and tormenting were for monetary reasons too (both physical and mental torture as opposed to just mental torture)
Doomwatch with its theme of Eco-tragedy/radiation mutation is still highly perinent in todays "climate"

Now to the scores. Its nice to see full use of Paul Ferris's "Main Titles" while the menu is playing. The "Main Titles" actually loops about 6 times during the Image Gallery feature, which is a shame as it would have been nice to hear more of the score.
After hearing the "Main Title" so many times now I realise how weak certain elements of the Silva Screen re-recordings are on the "Horror" CD. Sure, the "Pastoral/Romanza" sounds beautiful in Dolby Surround but the opening discordant muted brass stabs of the "Main Title" sound too quiet and weak compared to the original. The original motifs are loud/punchy and very much in-your-face, which just adds to the harsh discordancy that is needed to illustrate the cruelty of Matthew Hopkins.

On the "Doomwatch" menu we are treated to the beautiful pastoral-type strains of John Scott's "Main Title". It was a lovely surprise to see that the score was by John Scott before I bought it and it was the final detail that convinced me to buy the movie as I couldn't remember much about the film itself. Well, its British, its a kind of Horror film, it has Ian Bannen and Judy Geeson in it, it was originally a T.V. series on the BBC (alla Quatermass) and its from the early 70's.......in my eyes it must be good!!

Gae, have a gander back at one of the "What Have You Seen..?" threads (May or June or something) for comments from Lou Goldberg etc on WITCHFINDER GENERAL. Maybe you contributed too? I haven't had a look back yet. Watch the film first, though.

I actually remember when DOOMWATCH (what's that DOOMSDAY ye're on about?) was a BBC series. When I was about ten years old it was as nightmarish as my worst nightmares! I saw the film too more recently, but can't really remember it. Tell us about it when you get your thoughts together.

Thanks Graham, I will. I may even get round to writing a review one day!
