On the Proms on BBC2 tonight was a whole program dedicated to Great British Film Music. Did anyone else see it?The music performed was the following:-
The Cruel Sea (Rawsthorne)
Oliver Twist suite(Arnold Bax)
Richard III-Prelude (Walton)
Murder on the Orient Express suite(Bennett)
John Barry medley..The Lion in Winter/Dances with Wolves/OO7 suite
Things to Come suite (Bliss)The concert made for a great 2 hours viewing and listening experience. The interesting thing was that, during the interval, the point was made that back in the Golden Age of Film scores, film music was considered inferior by many to the so called "serious" Concert Hall music and yet listening to the above scores of Walton, Bliss and Bax, they are the most "Classical" sounding, less film-music sounding of the bunch, especially compared to Barry and Bennett whose music sounds very filmic.
It raises the intriguing question, has film music evolved into its own unique art form, that sounds like no other medium?Gae

I set the video for it, but haven't got round to watching it yet. That's a delight to look forward too...posted 08-18-2003 07:42 AM PT (US)

You're not half wrong - you can usually tell when someone with a concert hall background tackles film music - the music is very often a cut above the rest of the field in terms of structure and technique. Among modern composers, you only need to listen to the (far-too) occasional score by Tan Dun, John Corigliano, Philip Glass or Michael Nyman to tell the difference - even though the music is not as listenable/melodic as the general body of film music, the material tends to hold up better to repeated playing largely because of the detail in the writing. (As well I've always wondered what a film score from Steve Reich would sound like.)
