I would reccomend his Othello suite.

I say go for BATMAN FOREVER. Both movie and score have been much maligned, but Goldenthal's music is just, in my ears, terrific. (The movie's pretty good, too. No classic, but a damn sight better than BATMAN & ROBIN.)

    I second the Othello suggestion.

Also seek out Demolition Man, if you're able.

My recommendation too. Totally whacky, over-the-top Goldenthal - it's great!

I couldn't stand the movie. I just watched B&R yesterday and found it bad, but not quite as horrible as I remember Forever.

Definately get "Othello" if you can find it. That's a great work with a lot of power in it. I belive Varese has it on their website.

I'd recommend "Batman Forever", "Fire Water Paper", or "Cobb" but they are out of print and hard to find.

My final recomendation for you is "In Dreams" If you want music that fits a Goldenthal mood, that's it right there. Goldenthal writes a dissonant score that includes slamming guitars, wailing saxaphones, and a gentle piano. It's an underated effort that I personally think (as a Goldenthal nut) is great.

Here's hoping I can recommend S.W.A.T. as well tomorrow :P

Some Goldenthal scores I enjoy that I didn't
    see mentioned:

    A Time to Kill
    Golden Gate
    Heat
    The Butcher Boy

    Pet Sematary

A fantastic little score Even if he listened a little bit too close to "Amityville Horror" before writing it.

The Butcher Boy, definitely... and Batman Forever

Is A Time to Kill any good?

I agree with Wickenstein about In Dreams, though it's a little though listening. Has a great song too (as usual with Goldenthal songs).

And don't listen to ManOfSorrows....Pet Semetary might be great (I haven't heard it yet), but he can't judge because he doesn't have any other Goldenthal scores yet.

A Time to Kill has some good moments and I think it's a fine score, but it's definately below most of his other works.

I don't like Pet Semetary very much. You could have told me someone else composed the score and I would have believed it. I prefer the post-Alien3 polish avante guarde techniques that he adopted afterward.

    Brian,

I think the next step for you before delving into these more challenging recommendations would be picking up "Demolition Man", which is guaranteed to please with Goldenthal's action music along with the over-the-top happy ending.

Guys! Thanks for the suggestions...does "Demolition Man" have his harsh brass stuff too?

TITUS - if only for the opening and, in particular, uber-powerful closing cue. The rest is definitely a mixed bag and not for all tastes. But I could - and have - listend to the final cue for hours on a loop.

And huzzah and kudos to those that mentioned PET SEMETARY (one of the few horror scores I listen to when I'm doing something other than writing or reading horror) and IN DREAMS, which has some great stuff on it.

    Brian,

First off, I hope all is well with you!

Cobb is definitely one you must have. All the suggestions above are all unique and have there own sound and are all worth owning.

As for Demolition Man, it does have some over-the-top brass writing, more along the lines of Batman Forever. It is a short disc, but has some really fun cues and some more experimentation with electronics. Get it, but wouldn't be my first reccomendation.

    Take care,
    Aaron

Out of Demolition Man and Cobb, the latter is without a doubt the superior score. It depends on if you're in the mood for action or drama.

    Go to http://www.musicfromthemovies.com/pages/goldenthal_elliot.html

We have reviews of most of his scores. I'm a major Goldenthal fan... first get try to find "Cobb" and then go for "A Time to Kill" or his incredible "Fire Water Paper: A Vietnam Oratorio"!

Elliot Goldenthal has become my third all time favorite composer next to Jerry Goldsmith and Howard Shore. His writing is always so earnest and extent. It is a great listening experience throughout all his score. Still trying to find "Fire Water Paper", and hoping he will finish his opera some day! That would be great!

    My recommended Scores:

    Michael Colliins
    Sphere
    Titus
    Demolition Man
    Batman Forever
    Interview with the vampire
    The Good Thief
    Frida

the list could go on and on....

Goldenthal is a true inspiring master!
    Wish I could meet him...
