    Hulk
    X2
    Johnny English
    Children of Dune (the main theme)

    Plus the theme heard in the first track of LXG is quite good.

    Yeah... In retrospect, it seems that the reason I like that theme is because it sounds like something Hans Zimmer would have come up...

    If Hans Zimmer wrote themes, which he doesn't seem to do anymore, I think he would come up with something far better than that. But you're right to some extent, it does sound a little Zimmerish.

    Hans Zimmer not writing themes? Have you listened to any of his scores since Gladiator? They all have themes, and very obvious ones at that. I think with themes this were Zimmer does not fail, whether you like his thematic styles or not, there are ALWAYS themes in his scores, and they're repeated; so, don't say he doesn't write themes anymore, that's complete nonsense.

    Favourite theme:

    Children of Dune (the one used on Master & Commander, since my CD is still on order I have no idea what track it is)

    Probably the simple yet catchy (aren't those the best) theme (introduced in "Dawn of a New Century") from Trevor Jones's The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

    Dare I say Beltrami's John Connor theme (best heard in the cue T3)?

    I also think that Children Of Dune's theme was stunning.

    Overall, however, I am unimpressed by this year (in more ways than one )

    Don't you mean best heard in John Ottman's Apt Pupil?

    I wasn't impressed with alot this year. But I'd have to say it would be Silvestri's main title from The Predator which gets released this year. Its one of my Top 5 favorite themes of all time.

    But I thought the music heard when Neo burst through the door leading a trail of flames behind, at the end of the film when he's flying at top speed to save Trinity from falling was awsome.

    I agree that WILLARD had a terrific theme.

    Other good themes from this year:

    X2 (John Ottman)
    Darkness Falls (Brian Tyler; did everyone forget about this?)

    I was indirectly referring to his lack of responsibilities in most of the scores after Gladiator where in you get more assistants doing the work than the teacher. The themes in those movie were good, but I'm not sure it is because the co-composers were able to improve upon it or not. Am I making sense?

    I know what you mean by Hans Zimmer having less responsibility on most of his scores after Gladiator, while his assistance tackle the odds and ends. Let's take Pearl Harbour. He wrote all the themes for it, most of the action material being unused music for Gladiator, and had a hard time with it (who wouldn't? I can't imagine writing music for a cube-head like Ben Affliction and the morose Kate Backinsale — who's greatest trait appears to be her bum, according to the trailer for Underworld). So, he wrote the main theme, "Tennessee" and obviously spent a lot of thought on it; I think it's one of his best. But, the rest of the CD sounds like odds and ends, his stuff mixed in with whatever Klaus Badelt and Steve Jablonsky (and I know there were others involved, but as I understand it, those two handled most of the score that Zimmer did not) were able to come up with using Zimmer's themes. Now, I'm afarid I'm not making any sense. Basically, the scores he's less involved in, he wrote themes for them and several major cues (like Tears of the Sun), while his assistance tackle whatever else he assigns for them; he's taken more of a producer role, running Media Ventures like band.

    I hope that The Last Samurai and Matchstick Men are a return to him taking more time with the films he gets, writing most of the music, since it is inevitable that others will be working with him on those projects.

    I saw PBS's series "Perilous Fight: America's World War II In Color" on Tuesday and Wednesday. The music was done by Chris Elliot (I believe) and the theme is simple, yet very moving... perfect for looking back to a dramatic time gone by.

    For me this was the most notable music scoring I've heard this year.

    Gotta be Beltrami's "John Connor" theme for me, too. It was just so striking/moving. Honestly, that and Kristianna Lokken's tush are about the only thing I remember about this movie, now...

    A close 2nd is Thomas Newman's "Finding Nemo" theme that opens/closes the film - again, moving, emotional, beautiful. Lent a lot of power and emotional truth to an animated film whose voice work and animation already took it out of "kid's ville" and made it just about the most mature work from Pixar yet, IMO (though Toy Story 2's character development gives it a run for its money).

    And though it doesn't count, "Ending (An Escent)" from 28 DAYS LATER - bucking my general theory that if you've used a song iconographically once, nobody else can use it again. I was moved to tears when it was used in TRAFFIC and then having it used in 28 DAYS LATER - along with a lot of other effective music - was just fantastic, topping off my fave movie of the year thus far.

    Finding Nemo is another great score. The Turtle Theme is probably on par as the best theme this year. I love thos Trombones.
