You know it may be a little late to enthuse about a score that is out of print and hard to find, but I just got The Misfits and WOW what a great score!

I own a fair amount of a North’s stuff but it never really wowed me the way other’s work has. (I confess: I find Dragonslayer to be tough going) I did enjoy Spartacus and Cleopatra but I guess it just didn’t click for me.

Misfits is another story. I haven’t seen the film, but Ryko album just sounded awesome. To hear him move from a jazzy almost big bad piece to some of the more intimate themes really amazed me.

I guess I will have to pull out my other North and re-listen with a more open attitude.

Anyone else out there with a similar story or desire to heap abuse on me for discovering Alex North so late?

    Bring it on, Baby!!

All I've heard is the one track on the Elektra compilation, but I like what I hear.
(you can check out the compilation, and other releases, here)

By all means ignore the mixed reviews about being too talky and all that rot and watch the film. Anyone who has any sense of Hollywood history cannot dismiss the work if for no other reason than the creative forces behind it from writer to director to cast. Oh, and Mr. North's incredible talent for capturing inner layers via 'pyschological' music is fully on tap.

North is one of the 25 I collect and have for many years liked him. I have just about everything he has on LP and CD out and some 45s.

My favs include: Spartacus-all the unrecorded music(exc on boot) is fantastic

Agony and Ecstasy-great score-especially main title, music for the fighting pope and many other great cues in this score including Blind-very moving and powerful

    Shoes of Fisherman-great stuff

    Misfits-great score

Cheyenne Autumn-great themes and great battle music

Penitent-dont have it-but some powerful music in this esp for the walk up the mt with the guy carrying the cross-great long piece of tremendous music

    Rose Tattoo-nice score

    Viva Zapata-Excellent
Death of a Salesman-some great music in this esp for crash scene-driving powerful piece-very good percussion

    Wonderful Country

    Last Butterfly-nice end title

    Streetcar Named Desire

from 1951-late 60s consistently good, after that hit and miss, with not so many good opportunities

Dead and Under the Volcano both pretty good too

    See ya, J.

'Gathering Forces' from Viva Zapata! is one of my favourite tracks of all time. Whether on the compilation I mentioned above, or Goldsmith's re-recording, this track reminds me why I love film music. Magic.

Thanks John! That's quite a list of things to look for. Shoes of a Fisherman and Agony and the Ecstasy sound especially interesting.

Looks like I have some listening to do!

I'm not sure if I will watch Shoes or the Fisherman of not.

I enjoyed the novel by Morris West and as much as I enjoy Anthony Quinn I am afraid the movie will suffer in comparison. There seemed too much in the novel to compress into a movie.
