Not very surprisingly, Hans Zimmer has been hired to compose the music for Jerry Bruckheimer's big budget production of King Arthur, directed by Tears of the Sun helmer Antoine Fuqua and starring Clive Owen as the king. The film is currently in production and is slated for premiere in December 2004. Remaining projects this year are Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men, opening on September 12, and Edward Zwick's The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise, opening in the US on December 5.

Well, I guess I always have Beyond Rangoon to give me hope. (Not that Beyond Rangoon would fit into King Arthur, just that it's a great score.) I'll try to be as positive as I can.... I really, really hope Zimmer pulls through on this one, but I'm not holding my breath for it.

The question is, will it be Zimmer or will it be a legion of Media Ventures composers?

In any case, he (or they) seem highly inappropriate for the film. But then, that producer/director combination doesn't exactly inspire confidence that it will be a masterpiece.

Couldn't Paul Verhoeven have directed it and Goldsmith scored it?

Marian, that Tirol Concerto of Philip Glass is a fine thing indeed. It seems a shame to mention its name in a thread devoted to this unfortunate news.

Actually...gauging from the set pictures I have seen they appear to be going for a very authentic look, with a grim, hard edge.

I will remain optimistic about both the film and score until I have due cause to fret. Zimmer in Gladiator mode would suit this project just fine.

James Southall and Doktor Timmer have both shocked the crap outta me by having neglected to state the obvious: to wit, that John Barry should've gotten the job.

Quill, why would you want Zimmer in "Gladiator mode" for King Arthur? Don't you want to hear him do something totally different than Gladiator? If you want more Gladiator than just buy Pirates of the Carribean... it sounds close enough.

I shouldn't be this superficial, but it makes me NOT want to see a movie when I hear Zimmer and Gang are scoring it.

although, I am man enough to admit when they hit a home run, and The Ring is a shining example of what they can do.

Unfortunately, Equilibrium and Pirates of the Caribbean are also shining examples of what they can do.

Wow, Clive Owen has the starring role in this film?

I hope that, somehow, he races around in BMWs, because if that happened it just might be worth watching this picture (and being forced to listen to the music in the film...)

OK, Pirates of the Caribbean doesn't sound as much like Gladiator as all you more-ons are making it out to be. It's clearly more like Black Hawk Down! But hey, I still love the score and can't quit listening to it.

To a GREAT King Arthur film, yeah, Barry would be fantastic....but this is Bruckbummer!

Ummm....I said mode...which implies style. I don't think Zimmer in The Rock mode would work well for example.

I did not say, let's just edit in the Gladiator score.

    Better?

    LOL!!!

Well, I think it's silly to want that from a score. I'd prefer he do something totally original that blows my mind, like The Thin Red Line.

scoreguy16, Pirates sounds like several of Hans Zimmer scores, like Muppets Treasure Island, The Rock (mostly not his, though), Gladiator, Pearl Harbour, and Black Hawk Down. But it certainly has one theme in track 3 that sounds very much like the heroic Maximus march from Gladiator (just a little more kiddy-like), and the last track sounds like The Rock... etc. etc. I love this score, too!

I am sure that Zimmer will try something different for this one (medieval instruments). Normally, when he (they?) take on a new genre of film for them, the score will at the very least have a somewhat unique sound, not heard before in MV scores. Witness Hannibal, Gladiator and the numerous different Zimmer-scores from the early 90`s (I`ll do Anything, Beyond Rangoon etc.).

Yes, it's lovely. Fortunately the liner notes only talk about the first movement using bits of original Tyrolian music, otherwise I'd have to assume that The Truman Show was set in Tyrol.

Indeed. Unfortunately it's only 28 minutes of music, on a full-priced CD, but I figured it wouldn't get more music, and not cheaper either, so I finally picked it up after hearing a lovely bit of it in a Tyrol commercial on TV.

I've been meaning to e-mail you for weeks, hopefully I'll finally actually do it.

Good point Sean...anything new and fresh is fine with me. I guess more of what I was thinking of with the Gladiator comment is the pacing of the score and his use of alternate instruments or sounds.

That all being said, I do not prefer new and fresh when it compromises the purpose of the film score (ala Mission to Mars).

    Zak
