I wanted to mention our latest Marco Polo Classic Film Score release. Screen Archives has let me know they received a shipment from Europe. As with RED RIVER, I would recommend anyone interested in these two recordings to get the European versions as it has our booklets, with photos, intact. It seems the laws for film related graphics are different in Europe than USA and when they are released in America will certainly be stripped of stills and the covers, unfortunately. I believe Craig Spaulding is selling them at prices comparable to the eventual USA release....whenever that may be. Thanks, JohnBlurbs: Max Steiner's: Music for Bette Davis Films All This, And Heaven Too and A Stolen Life (Marco Polo 8.225218) The Marco Polo Film Music Series has previously recorded much of composer Max Steiner's prolific output. With this recording we present what Steiner himself considered his favorite "type" of film....the Bette Davis dramas. All This, And Heaven Too (1940) and A Stolen Life (1946) show Steiner's penchant for memorable themes and how he varies and develops them in dramatic situations. We have distilled all the major and important musical sections to best present this music in a pure listening environment, while remaining faithful to the original orchestrations. The 28 page booklet includes notes on the films' productions, the Warner Bros. orchestra, Max Steiner and Bette Davis, as well as music notes on the scores and comments on this new recording. Dotted throughout the booklet are rare behind-the-scenes production photographs. Dimitri Tiomkin's: Red River (Marco Polo 8.225217) Howard Hawks' Red River (1947) starring John Wayne is one of the true classic westerns to come out of Hollywood during its Golden Age. The score, by Russian-born Dimitri Tiomkin, is also regarded as a masterpiece and led the composer to many subsequent assignments dealing with the old west. Our CD features the world premiere recording of the entire score with full orchestra and choir. As with previous recordings in the Marco Polo Film Music Series, great care was given to restoring the music and remaining faithful to the original orchestrations. The 32 page booklet contains essays on Tiomkin, Hawks, the rerecording, as well as rare behind-the-scenes production photographs.

Just recieved these and all I can say is that they are the same level of quality as all your other releases.I have all your CD's (except for those pesky RCA European releases) and I can say that I have never been disappointed in any of them. My personal favorites are: The Victor Young CD, with Uninvited, a particular gem. I compared "The Village" cue with the film version and I was startled by how good your version was. The entire Egyptian CD is excellent, with a rich sound that is simply incredible. I also have the FSM release and I would hate to choose between them. They Died With Their Boots On, Son of Kong/Most Dangerous Game and of course, King Kong itself show how well you handle the Max Steiner material. I still have hope that one day you will do the threatened Steiner War CD with Caine Mutiny, Passage to Marseille, Operation Pacific or maybe some Dive Bomber. Anyway, a grateful fan would like to thank you for making this bountiful crop of scores available. Thanks a google!

This gives me an opportunity to add my praise to that which has gone before--RED RIVER is a fine, fine rendition of this early Tiomkin classic. To hear the "Suspense at Dawn" cue lead into "On to Missouri" in a sumptuous digital recording just sent chills down my spine. For the confirmed Tiomkin addict, this is manna from heaven. Great Job, and my wholehearted thanks for your, Bill Stromberg, and all involved in this wonderful release for bringing what must have been a gargantuan project to fruition. It doesn't get much better than this--except for maybe OBJECTIVE BURMA. [Message edited by Vinylscrubber on 07-16-2003]

John, Thanks for the information about the Red River CD. I missed picking up the CD when it was originally released. I have placed my order with Craig at Screen Archives. Any plans for future film score CDs?

Well John, thanks. We do have our complete recording of Korngold's ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD due out late Sept, early October in both CD and DVD-A 5.1 sound versions, as well as Steiner's ADVENTURES OF MARK TWAIN early next year. Right now I am scoring a feature film so that will keep me busy until the end of the year.Best, John
