David Newman doing THE CAT IN THE HAT? Really?! Now I have two reasons to see it, the other being to see if Bo Welch can direct a film half as well as he designs one (BEETLEJUICE, MEN IN BLACK).

Yep, David Newman has been signed to score this film, replacing Marc Shaiman. Shaiman is still onboard responsible for the songs in the film.

Two things of keen interest to me:

The Alamo: Carter Burwell (not Horner)

The Last Samurai: Hans Zimmer (not Horner)

While Horner was never attached to these, it is a departure for both directors. The Last Samurai surprises me the most, as I would have thought Zwick would have tried to return Horner to the days of Glory and Legends of the Fall.

I will always be a Horner fan, but given his track record of late I am not overly disappointed with the assignments.

    Thanks for the listing...great info!

    Quill:

The Alamo is now being directed by John Lee Hancock, whose only previous feature film was The Rookie, also scored by Burwell.

I'm not crazy about the idea of Zimmer on The Last Samurai unless he can pull out something as good as Beyond Rangoon again (I'm not a big fan). I wouldn't be too crazy about Horner, either. But I'm not really sure who I would like to see on that movie. Bruce Broughton maybe, but that's my answer to everything.

Ditto on Bo Welch, SBD. He did a fantastic job designing A Little Princess as well, and he also brought in Emmanuel Lubezki (who shot that film beautifully) for Cat in the Hat. So we'll see how that turns out.

You can add Ron Howard's new film The Missing to this list, which will be scored by James Horner. Apparently it's being released in late December so they must consider it Oscar-worthy, or have deluded themselves into thinking that it is.
