Well, the last two titles (T3 and Italian Job) have come and gone, and their upcoming release schedule is worryingly empty - anybody know if they have ANYTHING in the pipeline??

    Cheers,

Hollywood Records is releasing the soundtrack to TOMB RAIDER & THE CRADLE OF LIFE.

Twenty bucks says that Varese releases Silvestri's score.

    JJH:

I hope you are right about some new Varese Club releases being in the works. I was watching the Fox Studio Classics DVD of ANASTASIA and a complete release of Alfred Newman's score would be nice.

Has anyone listened to Jon Burlingame's commentaries on several of the Fox DVD releases - LOVE IS A MANY SPLENDORED THING, SONG OF BERNADETTE, and ANASTASIA. Any thoughts?

As Burlingame has a book on the Newman family forthcoming, I expect his remarks will be insightful. I just haven't had time to listen to these, or even watch the films, except in 15 minute spurts, here and there.

Too much consumption and too little time to enjoy it! Surely consumers in this specialized niche must be at some kind of saturation point.

Now that's a $20 legal bootleg I would buy if it were released on the Varèse Sarabande CD Club label.
Which is why it'll never be released.

    How about this?????

    THE LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARY GENTLEMEN
    Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

    Music Composed by Trevor Jones

    Sean Connery

Set in Victorian England, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen centers around a team of extraordinary figures enlisted by a mysterious caller to stop a villain intent on turning the nations of the world against one another.

The coterie of heroes are led by Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery) and comprise some of the greatest figures from adventure literature: Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), Dracula vampiress Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), Invisible Man Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran), American secret service agent Tom Sawyer (Shane West), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend), and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemyng). Richard Roxburgh (Moulin Rouge) plays the League’s enigmatic recruiter, M.

Stephen Norrington (Blade) directs this 20th Century Fox film and the extraordinarily exciting action score is by composer Trevor Jones.

This CD will not be released in the United States.

    Catalog #: 302 066 492 2

NOT RELEASED IN THE U.S.?????? What the HELL is that about????

The impression I have gotten is that Trevor Jones wants complete control over his score's releases...and that he could possibly release it on his own label in the future. This is ONLY speculation, but it might be a good idea for someone to check it out and get the definitive answer on this. I am HUGELY disappointed...but, by God, I will find a way to get this score...as I am a BIG Trevor Jones fan (especially after hearing Dinotopia recently).

These are my guesses for what they're worth.

To my knowledge, this is the first time Varese has outright announced the release plan of a score where the U.S. was omitted from the plan. This leads me to believe that

A: They announced this to see what demand for the C.D. is in the U.S. Market so that

B: so that they can determine whether the release will be worth the investment.

So if you want this score, e-mail Varese and POLITELY ask them why this decision was made, what it was based on and that you're enthusiastic about both the film and the score.

Well now, I seriously doubt Varese would limit the score to Europe just to see if the demand in North America was high.

Unless they are planning to sell the CD in Canada, then it shouldn't be too hard for people to get. Unless by "United States" they mean "North America".

We should see soon why Varese chose to do this.

If it truly is released in Europe then it should not be hard to come by. All of Varese's recent releases for example can be found at amazon.co.uk, not to mention the more specialized online dealers.

Varese is at a new craziness level.

First it's, "Star Trek is the first digitally-recorded film score."

Now they're releasing albums... but not totally releasing them... What type of screwball lawyer was behind this deal?

Varese might not have U.S. rights to the LXG soundtrack album. If you look at X2, SOLARIS, ANTOINE FISHER, they are all Fox films on the Superb/Trauma label. Perhaps Superb does not have foreign distro, so they set up with Varese who has a good relationship with Fox?

But who wants to speculate? It only gives some people fits

This is not something to blame Varese for--in this case, they do not have US rights, which were not granted to them by the studio because they have other ideas for the title in this market.

If this is truly the case then I applaud Varese for bringing us some form of Jones's score in pressed format! I wouldn't mind this as a trend for the future in the cases where Varese can't secure U.S. rights.

JosephWB has a point- if it's available in Canada, we can just order the score outside of the U.S., Intrada has carried international copies of music before, unless they're barred from the deal. But then, we could always try Amazon in the UK, unless this deals bars import sales (which any smart business person wouldn't do since it makes money, duh), then it should be just easy, though more costly.

Other than that, what can we do? I've written Varese, for all the good it will do. Maybe the music supervisor for the film is next, or Fox. Will they listen? It's almost sure that they will not.

It is now confirmed that the principal distribution for the "League" soundtrack in the US will be via Apple's itunes system, but Varese will be able to sell directly from their website regular copies for those unable to utilise the Mac service. A reasonable solution, don't you think?

If CDs were on sale in the UK for the standard USA price I'd have a hell of a lot more of them. A standard Varese release in the UK high street runs the sterling equivalent of around $20 (the cost of an Intrada Collection, Varese Club or FSM Silver Age disc). It's cheaper for me to order direct from Varese's website and pay shipping on top than to buy the CDs at my local stores.

CDs are too expensive. DVDs give a much better value for the money. When will the music industry realize that they're pricing themselves out of business?

I'm very disappointed to hear the iTunes rumor confirmed. This is not a good thing.

A reasonable solution, but a scary future.

If this imbecility gets done more often, I will gladly stop buying music altogether. There are hundreds of pastimes and hobbies dying for my consumer's money.

On a related note, EMI sucks ass. A load of their new CDs are coming with computer copy protection. I'm fairly sure this won't discourage people who really want to bootleg EMI's frisbees. On the other hand, it pisses me - the consumer who bought the CD legally in the store - because instead of using the supposed advances in computer technology to transfer a CD to MD in 10 minutes, I need to do it manually exactly as I would copy an audio tape.
Which sort of begs the question, why do I need a CD-burner, a portable CD player compatible with mp3 or ATRAC3, a portable mp3 player or a minidisc player, when I'd be just as well off with my good old Sony Walkman?

No, but you shouldn't really complain about it when you get them considerably cheaper than others.

No argument about the costs of CDs; thank goodness for used CD stores. Though I don't really agree about the better value of DVDs. For a start, score CDs have a far greater repeat value than DVDs; they can be played in cars and offices, or while doing something else entirely (I couldn't post to these messageboards while watching a DVD). And they're shorter as well. Secondly, there are only a small number of movies I'm actually going to want to watch over and over. I very rarely watch movies more than once, unless they've really made an impression on me. DVD Rental isn't a major option in this area at the moment, though that will probably change; when it becomes the dominant medium over VHS for film rental, I might think about buying a player. But that's just me...and I'm aware that I'm in a minority.
