What a GORGEOUS score, with beautiful themes and exciting action material and over an hour in length on the disc. HIGHLY recommended (9/10). Has anyone else heard this beautiful music? Any thoughts on this wonderful score? Is it obvious that I love this music?

Joe,It is a really nice score and I think that many more would enjoy it if they could find it. It is one of the more poorly distributed title outside of limited/Promo CDs, I know that it turned up in a few stores, but none of the online dealers seem to have it.
It conveys a sense of wonder and magic that is seldom achieved in genre scores although it is obviously what everybody strives for. I am particularly fond of “T-Rex Attacks” and “The Skybax Dawn Flight”.
Considering his body of work, Trevor Jones really has a flair for the fantastic. Between Dinotopia, Merlin, Dark Crystal, Dark City and Excalibur, you have a nice selection of the better composed fantasy scores.

I fervidly disagree with those who feel that Trevor Jones peaked with his music for Henson's The Dark Crystal. He can be inconsistent, but when he's on, he's on. His TV work of late has impressed -- Dinotopia especially -- but so has his film work: From Hell (although the album is slightly long), Thirteen Days, The Mighty. Even Dark City, though it doesn't best represent the lyrical writing with which Jones is most successful, has its share of memorable moments.I'm eagerly anticipating his work for The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

A CD this poorly distributed is almost worse than no CD at all.Can I have a CDR?

Hey Joe,Who was it that turned you on to Jones' score to "For Rosanna?"
That's a lovely CD that you hardly see anymore. Of course when you want to find it you can't. Then after you get it, it turns up everywhere.
As several of you will recall, I lucked into a batch of "Dinotopia" CDs last year and bought them all. Several I got for friends and the others I sold on eBay and while I made a killing, others on auction at the same time went even higher than mine did.
I thought this was one fine score by Jones. It reminded me of both his early work ("Dark Crystal") and his more recent stuff ("Dark City" and "Merlin")
The weird thing was that Geoffrey Alexander was nominated for an Emmy for his "orchestration" on the series, but Jones was overlooked for his composing.
Ahh...the wonders of these awards.

Dinotopia contains some of the best lyrical themes that he's done. The Waterfall City music is mezmorizing. But I found this score to be some what restrained compared to his normal bombastic style. That is the action sequences never reach the level of greatness that was achieved in such scores as Dark City and Desperate Measures. I suppose it was because this was a kids movie, so things couldn't be too scary or intense. Luckly the movie didn't have many action sequences.
The CD is definetly worth grabbing if you see it.

And for the record, it was James who convinced me to get For Roseanna...another beautiful, yet melancholy score.Frankly, Trevor Jones is an untapped treasure...and it would have been awesome if he had gotten X-Men over Kamen...but that's me. Can't WAIT for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen!

I haven't heard Dinotopia, and I haven't heard the full score to Loch Ness, so I don't have a fully informed opinion, but I have to agree about Dark Crystal. It is a bit underwhelming. Nice, but not really worthy of all the massive praise heaped upon it. Now it does have it's moments, but I just don't get into it, like others.
Jones's best score so far is Dark City. Dark City is surely one of the best sci-fi flicks ever, helped in no small part by Jones' throbbing, pulsing, exceedingly dark and oppressive score. It's one of Jones's many instances of wall-to-wall scoring, but it is so effective in creating the atmosphere in Dark City.
The climax of the score is very well done, even if it uses a variation on a love theme Jones has used before -- it is the theme's best incarnation as it appears in the end of film.Although, I could be wrong. Maybe his masterpiece is Crossroads.

Crossroads? Now....did you mean Criss Cross?
NP- Tim is still frantically trying to remove the plastic wrapper from his new John Scott CD. But he expects an enjoyable listen, with a great romantic theme.posted 06-24-2003 08:26 PM PT (US)

'twas a joke, man.but Jones did score that Britney Spears flick called Crossroads, but hell if I know what it sounds like, and God strike me down if I ever purposely watch that thing and hear the music in context.

I don't know anyone who saw Crossroads. We all diss it because its Britney Spears, but Jones might of actually wrote decent music for that. We're talking about Dinotopia here, and that movie was complete crap! But we all seem to agree positively on the score.
You know one Trevor Jones score I haven't been able to get into is Gulliver's Travels.
I never saw the movie, but the music sounds odd, and doesn't sound like it would even fit the picture. Its has this weirdly dark nature and synthisizers that I can't figure out. Anyone wanna share some thougts on Gulliver's Travels?[Message edited by TimT on 06-25-2003]
