... Or at least the "Main Titles" are!

Elfman impresses again. What an exhilirating opening to the score (the rest, sadly, I haven't heard!) Those descending woodwinds (0'23) over the towering brass gives me chills (this is the first of many statements of the main theme).

Speaking of the main theme, it's in there, (2'08, 2'34, 3'05, 3'37, 4'12) but will anyone care to find it? Who knows. It's been a year since SPIDER-MAN was released and some people STILL cannot hear that score's theme...

the rest of this score is just as enjoyable as the main titles Ryan!

The descending note theme/motif is great, and later on the score has some wonderful percussion (track 5 especially). It doesn't sound like samples either, but the real thing, played live. I dunno if this is correct though. The african-ish vocals work well too.

This is sort of similar to spiderman, but without the prominent theme that one had. Parts of this score reming me of "nightbreed". Good stuff.

I heard the CD. I didn't hear anything that new or exciting in it. All I could think was "eh!"

Erm, are these all advance copies?

Is the release date still June 20th?

    "It's not easy bein' green"

Any composer would have his hands full trying pump some life into this pic (though it wouldn't be a problem for Goldsmith since he's a penchance for scoring duds like these). Little wonder then that the studio opted for Mr. Oingo Boingo and his handy-dandy hurdy-gurdy to lighten things up. The angst. Oh, the angst of it all.

Yeah, like where are you guys hearing this CD? For some reason posts like these drive me nuts! People say "Oh yeah, I just heard (insert score title here), and it's not bad" and then don't say where they got it from, which is what every normal person is wondering.

NP: Star Trek — Nemesis (complete score) *****/*****

    Hey! Where'd I get that?!?

I got an advance promo copy from a friend who works in the industry.

By the way...total time is over 63 mins. with about 4 mins of them being a terrible song at the end.

I've heard a little bit of the score- that "Captured" track sounds absolutely nothing like Danny Elfman- more like Zimmer. I find it pretty damn interesting that there's middle-eastern vocals and idioms in a score that MYCHAEL DANNA was originally supposed to write. I guess if you want the Mychael Danna sound, fire Danna and get Elfman. Kudos to Danny, though, for obviously following orders well.

    SPQR,

You've seen the film? I've only read one review, but it was REALLY positive. You say it's a dud?

My friend who saw the film and gave me the CD said that ANY Hulk comic book was better written than this film. He said it was terrible.

    Hmmmm,

It's just hard for me to believe Ang Lee would make a BAD film.

The overall tone of this film is decidedly adult oriented. And, it's next to humourless. After Spiderman; after X2; well, the kiddies will be bored beyond compare.

Personally though, I got a kick out of Nolte's psychotic turn as Bruce's father. His performance is not the sort one is accustomed to seeing in a kids film:

"Nya, nya...stop your balling, you weak little speck of human trash."

And the Hulk is a kids film, isn't it? Or, supposed to be?

Some more advance reviews courtesy of Joblo.com (great or not...I find it hard to believe that this film is terrible...relative to what?!):
    _________________________
As the release of the latest "comic book movie" approaches, THE HULK (June 20) you are likely to see more and more coverage of it on our site. Today, comes a first review of the film (that I've seen, at least), featuring a TV critic from Dallas and Terry David Mulligan (that goof from Canada's own MuchMusic) discussing their views on the film, which they both seemed to like. They apparently were part of one of the first audiences to see the movie, which was presented by director Ang Lee, and other than the fact that they both agreed that it was a good film, here are a few more surprises from their review:

The film is not really like its trailer or ad campaign. In fact, the first hour is a "dark, deep, psychological drama" with lots of crying

Words like "melancholy", "thoughtful", "angry" and "dark" (this word was used often) were also used to describe it

Mulligan said that it was an "art house flick with big summer blockbuster positioning and budget"

    It's a "hard PG-13 and probably a borderline R-rating" movie...very dark

I caught the critic from Dallas giving his review on TV Saturday. He also stated the CGI Hulk looked much better than the version seen in the Trailers.

So, I picked up the score yesterday and after my first listen I am unsure of how to rate it. Many of the tracks (including "Hulk Out" and "Hulk's Freedom") have a great energy to them, but on the whole it feels a tad unfocused. I will reserve final judgement until I experience the music in the film, but so far a mixed-bag.

I don't mind the vocals, but I (like many others) am wondering how they fit the subject matter. Perhaps Ang Lee wanted to use it as a musical device to Banner's inner rage/demons/whatever...just a thought.

They probably don't fit the subject. For now I would guess that they are a remnant of Mychael Danna's style.
    (re: NYPost article)

As for the Hulkt score, I like it a lot more than the other recent Elfman scores. I find it much more coherent than POTA, and a lot more listenable than Spider-Man.
Nothing truly amazing, but still a good listen.

Seeing as others tend to post replies that have little to do with the actual subject...I just thought I'd add that I always read this thread as Skla! Elfman's HULK is a weiner.

    James

I'll be seeing the film on Friday. Not expecting much so I may be pleasantly surprised. The score on CD did nothing for me. Danny needs to do another "serious" film score like "Sommersby," "A Simple Plan" or "Black Beauty."

This was one of the WORST scored films in living memory.Enough with the african-chant crap music-totally does not work at all.The main title is Elfman in Herrmann mode-the only redeaming thing in a steaming pile of a score. The film was a cliched mess-and those anoying film edits-arrrg.Not much Hulk in a movie about the Hulk.Don't care about the characters -has no plot-please no more comicbook movies.Nick Nolte looked like he was a month long bender.

While I expect there will be many diversified reactions to this film, I for one profoundly enjoyed it.

I connected with the characters, and was actually able to adequately suspend disbelief while the big, green meanie was on screen. I left the movie much more satisfied than X-Men and much less exhausted than Matrix.

The score was serviceable and did not play much of a role. I would disagree that it was a detriment as previously suggested.

For the most part I thought the editing tricks were well implemented (except for one charater's death by fireball...dumb.) Only other gripe was the lighting (or lack thereof) in the final scene. Otherwise, I had a great time.

It appeared that most folks in the theatre did also--quite a bit of clapping for a summer flick. The movie should recoup its cost, but its ultimate success will hinge on word of mouth. We'll see which camp has the bigger mouths!

Maybe the African chants and the Arabic music worked for some, but for me the ethnic
music needed to be connected to a visual of camels and Lawrence. US desert and US
soldiers didn’t need some type of connection to the Middle East. I was jarred by such
    juxtaposition.

I thought parts of the movie were brilliant and parts were dull. I just couldn’t be
enveloped by the characters, especially Connelly who brought the ability and passion of an
amoebae to her part. Get a new girlfriend for the sequel.

I don't know Joan...I was pretty excited throughout.

of course...that could have been from the shaking lady next to meet, the 6-year old behind me asking questions (to which his father had the audacity to answer), or the 3-year old blathering away incoherently up and to the right!

I hear you, Quill. (And I'm glad you liked it more that I did.) There were a lot of kids in the theater. Noisy, squirrely kids! Too many parents thought this would be a kid's movie. Ahhh, don't think so. Kids were restless in this show. Take them to Nemo.

There were a lot of kids in the theatre when I saw HULK on Friday, as well. Too many little kids. The movie is rated PG-13 for a reason, and parents should be fully aware of this. My parents refused to let me see PG-13 movies until I was 12 or 13 unless they watched and approved of them first, and I'm better off for it. I know it's not the theatres' responsibility for PG-13 movies, but parents, all parents, need to be far more responsible about what their kids watch, movie wise.

The score for the HULK is just as (if not more) mediocre than SPIDERMAN.

BORING **** really...but then again SO WAS THE FILM.

When Elfman's given **** to work with nowadays...he produces just as good as he gets. I remember when he was given a crappy film (DARKMAN, NIGHTBREED) and he'd write something really much better than the film.

    Oh well...
