    From Comingsoon.net :

Warner Bros. has tapped Tim Burton to direct Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the second live-action adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic children's novel, reports Variety.

It is one of two projects Burton will make back-to-back at the studio, as he's signed to next do the stop-motion animation feature The Corpse Bride.

"Charlie" has long been considered one of WB's most promising properties, one that the studio hopes will lead to a Broadway musical, adds the trade.

Burton's has not made a deal yet, but it's close after a very positive meeting between the director and WB's Alan Horn, Jeff Robinov and Kevin McCormick. The Dahl estate has already approved Burton as the director they wanted most.

This could turn out to be a fully fledged score + songs effort just like Nightmare Before Christmas. If we're lucky that is.

On a seperate note, I still wish someone would make a film out of Dahl's The Witches or The BFG.

Oh and btw, Moviewave.net has posted a list of upcoming assignments for various composers.

Most of them sound very promising (unless they get rejected of course), but the one that sounds most intruiging is Morricone's attachment to Tarantino' Kill Bill. Any details on this? Doesn't the good old Quentin usually use his sublime music tastes to fill the soundtrack? Is this going to be a full score or just a few snippets in between the songs?

I think they already made a movie of the Witches starring Anjelica Huston.

After checking my facts; it was made in 1990 directed by Nicholas Roeg music by Stanley Meyers.

Unfortunately I don't believe it's a full score, it's "additional music", apparently for some spaghetti-western style scenes.

Looks like Tarantino isn't exactly compromising on quality if he's managed to snag Morricone just to write some western 'additional music'.

My mistake about The Witches - was that film released in theatres? I'd never heard of it. Has anyone seen it?

I saw it in theaters when it came out; it was a cute film; Jim Henson company was involved in the puppeteering, too.

Camillu, remember you can always check out the IMDb: http://us.imdb.com/Details?0100944

Oh, and back on topic here.... why would Tim Burton making a remake of WILLY WONKA necessarily imply a "GREAT Elfman score"? PLANET OF THE APES was far from "great"... and Elfman is not writing the same type of music he was back with NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.

While I personally look forward to every Elfman project, I certainly won't label music as being "great" without having heard a single note of it.

Dan - Of course we can't praise a score before it's even written. All I'm saying is that CATCF is the type of whimsical imaginary tale that Elfman has proved so inspired by in the past (Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands). He himself said how much he enjoyed working on Nightmare, and the results are very obvious.

So all I'm saying is that since Elfman usually writes his best work for Burton (granted POTA isn't his best stuff, but it's still great), and since Burton is tackling such a fairytale project, we can hope to expect a fun and (excuse the pun) sugary score from Elfman.

And yes, I know IMDB.com exists. I just asked about Witches before double-checking whether it was actually made. I shall now obviously have to face eternal damnation in the fiesty fires of hell.

    Hello,

I believe if this news about Tim Burton directing a new musical version of "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" is true, then I believe this is a revelation for Danny Elfman. Just the thought of Burton's version makes me imagine a carnivalesque, quirky, and possibly beautiful version. It has simply been too long since Elfman has been assigned to something remotely like this (same with Corpse Bride). Assuming he will be assigned to both, I believe this will possibly assure us that he will go back to his Nino Rota roots, which will be very welcome approach as opposed to the synth/percussive/action style. I believe he has been a tad overworked especially in these last two or three years in having all of these assignments for action/drama/sci-fi pictures, and it's time for him to go back to the kind of films I believe he was born to score (surrealist stop-motion films, beautiful/quirky/carnivalesque comedy-fantasies). I for one am hoping that Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" comes to fruition.

I forgot to mention that this year's "Big Fish" is also a very different and welcome assignment for Elfman, a drama/comedy/fantasy. In terms of both the film and the score, it has immense potential to become something very beautiful. I have heard that a carnival is a location in the film, which might provide Elfman a chance to write some carnival material (or source music, which he did for "Darkman"). It's the score I'm most looking forward to this year.

    Today's www.IMDB.com poll:

For his new adaptation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Tim Burton is reportedly deciding between two actors to play candy man Willy Wonka: Christopher Walken and Michael Keaton. Which of the two would you prefer?

    >>

I think Walken would be great. He has just the right amount of weird. If you've seen him in that Fatboy Slim music video, I'm sure you can imagine him prancing around the factory in a daze...

Shouldn't Walken be playing Grampa Joe?
