This report says Aaron Copland, composer for the concert-hall, stage and screen was beign investigated for having links to communist groups, an excerpt:

    quote:
WASHINGTON - FBI file 100-HQ-370562 begins simply enough.

On July 21, 1950, the subject, thought "to be self-employed as a composer of music," is reported linked to communist front groups. Within six months, he is classified outright as a communist.

So begins the government's surveillance of Aaron Copland, one of the country's most important composers, creator of such stirring music as "Appalachian Spring," "Fanfare for the Common Man," "Billy the Kid" and the patriotic "Lincoln Portrait."

The FBI probed Copland, but who probed Horner?

This probe was one reason Copland was not offered more film scores (esp. high profile ones) after winning an Oscar for "The Heiress." Of course, his own personal experiences of having music replaced, etc. while working on The Heiress, probably caused some reluctance on his own part as he turned down all 7 films offered between 1950 and 1961 until "Something Wild." Its a shame, too, considering what might have been.

In the 60s his output pretty much dwindled to a trickle as he focused more and more on conducting.

The FBI probed Copland, who probed Horner?"

Probably his proctologist. It'd explain quite nicely why Horner's work is such dreck.

As for Copland, not only was he investigated by the FBI, which compiled an inch-thick dossier on him, but he was called in to testify before Sen. Joseph McCarthy's closed-door committee -- which found and heard nothing that allowed them to accuse the composer of criminal or seditious activity, though tyey did debate citing him for perjury for denying that he was ever a Communist (of which there was, and is, no proof).

Who was it that said, "The past is prologue."? How long til the "Homeland Security" boys start busting the Dixie Chicks and Sen. John Kerry and others who have uttered "seditious" comments that "jeopardize" our national security? (If you think that's farfetched, check out "Scarborough Country" on MSNBC, weeknights 10-11 EDT, and listen to Joe Scarborough's mini-editorials.) The "damn-the Constitution-full-speed-ahead" guys are driving the boat, in case nobody noticed...

I forgot to mention that "Homeland Security" is welcome to James Horner (though I doubt they will want him!)

Driving the boat just like Capt. Smith was driving the Titanic (another horner connection) on the night of April 14, 1912...
