If I were a director and I wanted my film scored well, I would hire one of the following composers on the basis of the associated works:

Wojciech Kilar: Portrait of a Lady, Pan Tadeusz, Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Michael Nyman: The Piano, The Claim, Wonderland.

Philip Glass: Mishima, Kundun, The Hours.

Howard Shore: FOTR, TTT, The Game.

Elliot Goldenthal: Michael Collins, Final Fantasy, Titus.

Zimmer (and co): Thin Red Line, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down.

Of course such a list can only include those who still walk this green earth.

Franz Waxman: Destination Tokyo, The Spirit of St. Louis, Peyton Place

Dimitri Tiomkin: Lost Horizon, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Search for Paradise
