Over the past few days I put together this 2-CD compilation of my favourite piano-based pieces from scores.

Before I press 'burn' I thought I'd run it by you guys to see if there's any glaring omissions, although if there are it probably means I don't own the score.

    Comments? Suggestions? Marriage proposals?

Notable by his absence is Elfman, despite the fact that I have over half his scores in my collection. However, the only score pieces I could think of are in A Simple Plan, where the piano needs tuning, and Dolores Claiborne, where the pieces are mostly short and/or very depressing. Am I forgetting something?

    Thanks.

There is a John Barry piano piece that he wrote for Glass Menagerie that appears on the polygram Best of John Barry release. If you are lucky enough to have it you might consider it for this compilation.

Then you will be interested in EMI Classics' latest crapfest (another word for lame crossover attempts from a [formerly ?] respected classical label).

EMI just signed some guy named 'Maksim'. A Croatian or Serbian or whatever (it's not like anyone can tell the difference, as long as the question of religion is not brought up).

His new album is set to include Ernest Gold's theme from Exodus, along with other piano cues, by Jeff Wayne and contemporary Balkan Hornertypehack Tonci Huljic.

Herrmann's Concerto Macabre for piano and orchestra from Hangover Square is great stuff. It took a while for me to warm up to it when I first got the Gerhardt disc, but I enjoy it quite a bit now. With a running time of 12 minutes, though, it's never going to fit on your CDs.

Also, don't forget the piano arrangement of the Tora! Tora! Tora! theme on the FSM disc.

I'm going out and burning this CD double myself...

But I cannot allow the absence of the three Poles who've written some of the finest piano cues in the last 15 years:

Zbigniew Preisner - material from Blue, Double Life of Veronique and The Secret Garden.

Wojciech Kilar - Love Remains and The Kiss from Portrait of a Lady, Paulina's Theme from Death and the Maiden, and Vocalise from The Ninth Gate.

Jan Kaczmarek - Some of his sterling piano writing from Unfaithful should suffice.

    NP Octopussy (Barry)

Another John Barry choice would be the theme from LOVE AMONG THE RUINS. A television film starring Laurence Olivier and Katherine Hepburn of long ago love, remembered and forgotten.

John Barry's music for Indecent Proposal would be good for it, too. If you have it just mix one of the tracks from the 25min suite the CD has; I've done it.

That's a great collection you have there.

As long as you have included Rachmaninov's third piano concerto which is not original film score, I also think the second concerto could be included. Personally I prefer both the 1st and the 2nd movements from that concerto over that wonderful Rach 3 movement. I believe both these movements appeared in the movie "Brief encounter" which would qualify them to be on your album. Another wonderful Rachmaninov piece is the "Rhapsody on a theme by Paganini" which is included on Barry's "Somewhere in time" CD.

With "Being John Malkovich" I would rather have used "Puppet love" than "Craig's overture". I think "Puppet love" is much better plus I don't really consider "Craig's overture" a piano piece, since the strings are the dominant part which carries the melody while the piano really only play the same three notes over and over again.

One of my favorite scores of the 90's is for the German/Hungarian film "Gloomy sunday", and is composed by Detlef Friedrich Petersen. The wonderful pieces; "Gloomy sunday" & "Andras spielt" would fit perfectly on your album.

    Other pieces I would have used, if I were to make such an album, would be the following;

Ennio Morricone-Fatti di gente perbene-L'addio tra Linda e Tullio
    Ennio Morricone-Gli occhiali d'oro-Gli occhiali d'oro
Ennio Morricone-Il bandito dagli occhi azzurri-Madre assente(short version)
Ennio Morricone-Il deserto dei Tartari-La casa e la giovinezza
    Ennio Morricone-L'eredità ferramonti-Ricordo d'amore
Ennio Morricone-La dame aux Camélias-La dame aux Camélias
    Francis Lai--Love story-Theme from 'Love story'(Finale)
    Georges Delerue-Crimes of the heart-Meg
Michael Gore-Terms of endearment-Theme from 'Terms of endearment'
    Miklos Rozsa-Providence-Valse crepuscolaire
Philip Glass-Candyman-It was always you, Helen
    Stefan Nilsson-Martin Beck-Huvudtema
Stefan Nilsson-Pelle Erovraren-Mot den nya världen
    Stefan Nilsson-Skärgårdsdoktorn-Wilmas tema
    Yann Tiersen-Amélie-Comptine d'un autre été

While thinking about Gene Hackman, who IMHO is the most naturalistic American actor since Spencer Tracy, I remembered MISUNDERSTOOD (1984), with a mostly piano and
    string score by Michael Hoppe.

If you happen to have 'The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca' by Mark McKenzie, there are some really beautiful renditions of the main theme played on piano.

TDOGL would be close to track 1 on CD 1 for me!

I'm not even sure right now if there's a piano in the jazzy Banning Back Home. There definitely is one in that children's musical song though, We Don't Wanna Grow Up.

By a strange coincidence, the 2 cues I found today amongst my collection for possible inclusion in CD3 are:

The American President - The First Kiss (Shaiman)
Ever After - The First Kiss (Fenton)

I guess Piano music gets the phermones flying...

How about something from Far From Heaven by Elmer Bernstein? I think track two, "Mother Love" would work well, although it is very short. Either that or the opening cue, "Autumn in Connecticut."

I have even had the pleasure of meeting the pianist for this score, Cynthia Millar, so this came to mind almost right away.

Very true - the piano intro is wonderful. I only left it out becuase after the first few seconds there's no more piano.

It's the same reason why I left out the wonderful piano intro to The Rocketeer (also by Horner).

Thanks to all your suggestions, a few hidden gems from Jeron, and loads of post-exam free time, I finally put together the full compilation over the past month or two. It took ages of editing, listening, choosing, shortlisting, and volume-adjusting, but here's the track-list for the finished product.

Admittedly, Volume 1 is way too heavy on the Williams, but that was originally a compilation for my then-girlfriend so I left it as it was (see first post). othwerise I tried to spread the composers out equally.

Interesting observation - Patrick Doyle doesn't have many piano cues, though apparently his latest offering (Calendar Girls) is piano-heavy.

Other omissions I might include in a volume 5:
X2 (Life Goes On, The Lake)
    Flubber
    Wilde
    The Terminator (Love scene)

and more as they are released....

    Very good.

Might I also suggest THE PHANTOM (David Newman)? There's a great piano solo towards the end of "Must Be the Humidity".

Maybe you were trying to go for more Orchestral scores that just feature a piano, but my piano heavy compilation would not be complete without Dave Grusin's main theme from The Firm.

Always thought that cue sounded more like DAVE GRUSIN then Maestro Williams. Really had that cookin' GRUSIN style. It's ALL good! piero2

P.S. Very Nice compilation by the way!!!

Piero, yes, I always thought that that cue from HOOK was EXTREMELY like Dave Grusin. The great Dave Grusin has plenty of good piano work in many of his scores. ON GOLDEN POND is beautiful.

Aaargh!! This whole thing is heavy on "sensitive piano music"--something I've always hated! Whenever I hear that stuff I just see the composer standing there trying to tug on my heartstrings and I want to deck the guy. So I'd add these selections:

    The Conversation - David Shire

    And this little gem:

    Bad Company - Harvey Schmidt

The latter is a little oddball 1972 western with Jeff Bridges that features a great score for piano.

There was this "fan made" cd or something. never got the full story, of "MillenniuM" of Mark snow and the person had this beautiful piano redition of the main theme.

Darn, I had something else but forgot.

Oh, how could I forget? I just listened to it in my car-

"The Gift" from Buffy The Vamprie Slayer.
    Was released on the CD
    "Once More With Feeling!"

You have to put that on there.

If you want a haunting piano cue try Main or End Titles to John Williams' Presumed Innocent. Very close to perfection these cues. Cast Away has another very touching Piano.

That is a very nice compilation indeed.

However I only have bit a small handful of the pieces on there; is there any chance I could purchase the entire thing or torrent it or something? Would love to get my hands on those

What a great idea for a compilation, especially because the piano is my favourite instrument. Of course, since this thread was created three years ago, Elfman has had at least ONE wonderful piano composition: "Victor's Piano Solo" from THE CORPSE BRIDE.
