William Ross's association with John Williams, on HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRET, led me to pick up a used copy of Ross's THE EVENING STAR, this week. I am happy I did. Ross incorporated Michael Gore's TERMS OF ENDEARMENT theme into the score, although it was the cues by Ross, himself, that mainly got my attention. I found his string writing particularly appealing. There is a delicacy in the score that reminded me of Rachel Portman, also a favourite contemporary melodist of mine. Also includes a gentle arrangement of a favourite piece of Christmas music - Carol of the Bells. The disc is definitely a keeper and one likely to get replay in contemplative moments.

I also took note that the redoutable Jack Hayes [orchestrated for Elmer Bernstein in the 60s] was an orchestrator on the score, along with Chris Boardman [also worked with Bernstein on LOST IN YONKERS] and Scott Smalley.

His scores to My Dog Skip and Amazing Panda Adventure are very well done. Tuck Everlasting is good to but it sounds like a temp track, but I still like it. I love My Dog Skip.

You should see this photo I don't have anymore that a family member took. A sign out in front of a motel:

I went over and over again on the DINO ISLAND simulator in an amusement park mainly because William Ross' score was so great

William Ross is scoring THE YOUNG BLACK STALLION for Simon Wincer (no Basil! ) Should be interesting, though!

    Crono/Kyp:

Thanks for the tips on MY DOG SKIP and AMAZING PANDA ADVENTURE. I will look for them.

    Dan:

Also, Dan, thanks for alerting us to THE YOUNG BLACK STALLION. I am confident Ross will rise to the legacy begun by Coppola/Walker and Delerue.

I noticed you mentioned Simon Wincer's name being linked with this film. Although I am aware that Wincer has not worked exclusively with Poledouris [THE PHANTOM - David Newman and Eric Colvin's excellent work on the Wincer directed Tom Selleck TV movies], their relationship has produced some of Poledouris's best work, especially QUIGLEY and LONESOME DOVE. YBS would have been a great opportunity for BP to again exhibit his penchant for writing expansive, outdoor themes.

What's going on with Basil? I was surprised [and pleased] to see his name on an Asian film, THE TOUCH. But we haven't heard much from him, lately, in a Hollywood context. Is this Basil's choice, or is he a victim of being out-of-sync with the current politics of scoring in LA? He is an amazing talent.

I should mention, Dan, that I enjoyed the interview with Elmer Bernstein, you did awhile back. Do you know if Elmer is working on an autobiography? I hope so.

    Bob,

Basil was scoring OPEN RANGE, but now it seems that Michael Kamen is doing it. Dunno what happened there. (I need to drop him a line regarding some website matters, so I will be sure to inquire!)

Thank you for your kind words regarding the Bernstein interview. Elmer was (and always is) a joy to speak with; I had a nice (but brief) chat with him a few weeks ago just before the Oscars, and he didn't mention anything about his autobiography. But then, I didn't ask about it either.

I don't know the work of William Ross enough to comment, but he seems a nice guy in his interviews, and his helping hand on HARRY POTTER is accomplished. Actually, I just wanted to say that I have a photo of Hamilton Odeon (triple screen), 1988, with the following titles side by side -

    BIG · FRANTIC · SHAG

Justin, you want a copy of my photo of BIG FRANTIC SHAG? I'd be happy to oblige, but, unfortunately, it's sitting in a plastic bag in Scotland whilst I'm sitting, but not in a plastic bag, in Spain. I'll try to look it out next time I'm back.

Or are you asking for someone to send you a copy of a William Ross CD? Ah! Well, if so, permit me to be even less of a help.

    The picture. I can wait.

Dannny boy, I have access to about 10 different promos from other traders of Ross. Don't need to go around asking for one if I wanted one.
