Well, I'm not all that exited. I have seen the movie Magic, but I can't really remember the music. It's Goldsmith though. As for the others. I don't know. I'll see what the other members on board write about them.

Magic!! Hawaii!!!! Wooohoooo!!! It's about time we got a good release of Hawaii. And Magic is good stuff. Very good, very good, very good. And then anyting by Rosenthal is gold. The Waxman? Haven't heard of it... but I'd be willing to bet it's worth listening to... his work seems to always lean in that direction.

Yes, I'm very excited about Magic as well, and I look forward to hearing clips of Hawaii and the Waxman score (both of which I'm not familiar with). Magic is a great score, but has languished as an average sounding bootleg for many years. I have no doubt that this restored edition of this score will add dimension not heard since the recording sessions. Excellent movie as well, lets hope it's released on DVD sometime soon.Dylan

Hawaii?....EXCELLENT!...and MAGIC? I'm not a Goldsmith completist so I may or may not pick this one up, the music is 'okay' but it's not 'must have' IMNSHO.
I've never heard the Rosenthal score but this has to be welcomed considering how little of his stuff is out there...now when will someone do a cd release of METEOR?

$27 for Hawaii?What the ...?
Interesting note there, Bob, but where in the hell did you come up with this wacky price? Did this really take up that much time to produce?
And before you say, "oh it's only two dollars more than The Fury and three bucks cheaper than Home Alone 2," the fact is, these little price increases continue to add up.

Except for Magic, these releases suck.Let me rephrase this by saying that these titles are more obscure than I anticipated. I have however since listened to sound clips from The Return Of A Man Called Horse and find it to be quite good.

Nope. But Hawaii is one of the greatest epic scores Elmer Bernstein has ever written. I'll be very interested in hearing the sound on that one. Magic is also a fantastic score...and I'll spring for Return of a Man Called Horse.

Probably because they were written before 1990 and the names Hans Zimmer, Trevor Rabin, David Arnold or Media Ventures aren't attached.

Well, I've given this some consideration, and I think that, subject to reports about sound quality etc, I'll certainly stump up for MAGIC (it's Jerry, after all, and he's never let me down yet) and possibly for RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE. There's a 5:32 piece on a Silva compilation from this, which I do have but will have to listen to again. As for HAWAII: I'm sorry, but $27 plus international shipping is too much for music I'm not remotely familiar with (I've never seen the film either; like so many movies more than two years old it's probably not available on video, certainly not for rental), and a good chunk of which is duplicated on the second disc.
BELOVED INFIDEL - again, I've never seen the film, and Waxman is still very much of an unknown quantity for me (I only have the third of Varese's re-recording series, and the Gerhardt CD as well).
Still, that's a possible two out of four, which isn't too bad. I should, however, pick up JOE VS THE VOLCANO sometime, and possibly STUDS LONIGAN, from their earlier batches.
And I still want GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY and PREDATOR!

As a collective group, we people spend big bucks on these damn CDs. I (obviously) think that gives us a license to bitch about what is offered for sale if we feel like it.

Hawaii interests me the most, and I am slightly pissed the original artwork for the LP wasn't used for this release. Casts a different light on things with the weirdly BBC-looking cover art for this deluxe edition. But damn, that original artwork was great.... despite it making the film look like an Indy Jones adventure, sort of. I'm sure I'll enjoy the second disc legions more than the first... the album presentation was always great, and glad to finally have this on CD.... one more LP with no need to play any more. The first disc is essential only for archivists; mono sound, separated tracks, etc. Would be cool to buy only the second disc. I'm not much of an archivist collector. Does anyone know if the original album tracks are rerecorded for release, or the original tracks? I never wondered about that before now....Looking forward to that Waxman as well. Such wholesome cover art!

The HAWAII LP was a rerecording, with kind of "recorded in a shoebox" sound. Hopefully they were able to do something with that. The cover artwork is actually on the inlay. But you're right, it's a far more striking cover than what they used. Same goes for RETURN OF A MAN CALLED HORSE. The great artwork is put on the inlay. In fact, they did that with CAST A GIANT SHADOW as well. In a couple of these cases, I think they used the DVD artwork.Roger

Rare is the day when "you people" DON'T bitch about something.
Hell...I'm in total agreement with PeterK about the Hawaii cover art, but I'm just glad to have the score. To have Classic scores by Elmer Bernstein, Jerry Goldsmith, Franz Waxman and Laurence Rosenthal available all at once is a fantastic thing.
Sorry if you don't get something recorded after you were born. Film music didn't start after 1980 ya know.

JamesWrong person to say this to, but nevermind.
And it's not so much about the quality of the music, as the price.
The price in this case is not right, certainly not for those of us who have better ways to spend 19.99$, or 26.98$.And for all the hype about the Varèse Sarabande CD Club, there is hardly anything revolutionary about these CDs. Project X maybe. Maybe the Delerue.
There's a lot of hype about these releases, yet virtually none about Intrada limited editions. Or FSM for that matter. Fanboy losers get all wet when they learn that Varèse Sarabande will release more legal bootlegs. Then the fanboys update the Varèse page every 5 minutes to see if the releases have been listed and be the first to announce them.
No one seems to be doing that with FSM releases, most of which are a hell of a lot more deserving of attention than Varèse Club albums.posted 04-07-2003 03:59 PM PT (US)

I wonder why Varese even bothers. We should be thankful that they are even making the effort. While I can understand the pricing concerns that's just part of life. Not everyone can afford the same house, car, clothes etc.[Message edited by Mark Olivarez on 04-07-2003]

When you say they suck, are you saying this because you've heard the music and can't stand it, or they weren't the releases you had hoped for? If you haven't heard them, you never know...one of these could become one of your favorite film scores of all time. You don't have to buy them, but if you're a film score fan like me, you probably enjoy watching movies to discover new scores and expand your horizons. I don't know the score to BELOVED INFIDEL, but I'll check out the movie to see if I like the score.
To say a Franz Waxman score sucks, especially if you haven't heard it, is a bold step. I'm surprised at how many people condemn releases they haven't heard or complain about the cost. I mean, Varese doesn't automatically debit your checking account for the discs. If you don't care about HAWAII and the disc costs $27, what difference does it make?

Well said Dinko... also well said Roger, I'm NOT implying that the music sucks on the releases by any means, I just wish they would release more well known unreleased scores (like predator for example), i was just overall disappointed with their choices thats all. Let's see what they have in store for us next time. I too think that the FSM releases are overlooked, THX1138 is a cool score, I'm going to have to add that one to my collection when I get some cash.Rich

Wow!Well, there goes any value the SPFM Tribute CD had, and the Magic bootleg too, but it's great there is a legit of this for everyone.
Return of a Man Called Horse is an excellent score--this is absolutely great news.
I'm unfamiliar with the Waxman score, but it's Waxman so it's at least worth a listen.
Lots of original tracks to Hawaii can't be sneezed at either.
My only objection is the one voiced elsewhere: ouch on the wallet. I've been wanting to pick up Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing and Studs Lonnigan too but at $25 each, it's hard to fork the dough over.
I'll have to get these when I can.
