Ok, last week I was very excited.. Now, I think I am going to take the same approach I use when I watch the Mets on TV... Just because they are up 3-0 doesn't mean their gonna win, so don't get too excited until I can change the channel after the win!!!!

    Thanks,
    Chris

Not that it makes too much difference, but Peter, do you have any idea what kind of disc numbers we can expect? I noticed the numenorean site back up, and it says "taking orders for numbers 1-500". I was wondering how your bulk ordering service fits into that. (or if you will have to wait until after those 500.)

Just curious. You must know how we collector types can be. ;D

I don't think Peter has to *wait* until Numenorean has sold 500 copies before he can sell any. I think all the copies are already numbered, and Numenorean is simply keeping the first 500 pressings for themselves, for collectors who care about such things. The ones they send Peter K will be numbers 500-1000 or something like that. Just a guess.

I am jumping the gun if I ask what about the status of this release? On 4/3 it was estimated 2-3 weeks until the release, so I just wondered if we were still on target....

As indicated in the email confirmations received for orders placed, you will receive an email when these are shipped. I am expecting them now on Tuesday or Wednesday latest, which means all orders will be shipped by Wednesday or Thursday. If you have any questions about why this has been delayed a few days past the release date, send your questions to Numenorean, website linked above.

As soon as our server gets back online (grrr...) I'll have my review up, which has been sitting here for the past 3 days.

Suffice it to say, the album is a mixed bag, but ultimately worth it for the first disc.

    More details soon!

I don't understand. So Jones had no envolvment in this release at all? In most of his interviews Trevor Jones has expressed a strong interest, in one day releasing The Dark Crystal. I had thought that he was the soul force for getting his Numenorean release out.
So does he even know about this release at all?

And if Jones owns the original master tapes does that mean he owns the music?

Yes and no. Jones wanted to release the CD himself, on his private label (CLEOPATRA, DINOTOPIA). Numenorean got the rights to release it, with Henson who OWNS the score.

No. He is just in possession of the original digital masters, and would not give them up for this release. But he does not own the music. (It is rare that any composer OWNS the music they write. Usually they do it as a work for hire.)

Not very believable, either. I have to be the paranoid looooooooon now. Since when is the owner of the music not able to demand that the composer provide the master recording for the official release? Who produces an official release of a soundtrack without the composer, especially when the composer has shown great interest in producing the official soundtrack himself? Makes me think we'll see a "definitive" edition in the future.

Jones might not own the MUSIC, but he's in possession of the digital masters. That he chose not to provide them to Numenorian for this release was doing a disservice to his fans. And while Henson does own the music, I don't really know if there is a way - short of suing him - to force Jones to give up his digital masters. (And it's not exactly cost effective to sue Jones, ya know?)

So, Henson went with what THEY had.

And you guys honestly wonder why it took so damn long for this release to come out? Maybe it was because they kept trying to get the masters from Jones! (Clue alert!)

As for composers not being involved in CD releases - Film Score Monthly does that, ya know... and hey - even your favorite Canadian label, Disques Cinemusique doesn't always involve the composer.....

Yadayadayada. Dan, people still love you.

The only way out was not to sue. Obviously there was a clash between two parties, both wanting to produce the CD. There was no amicable agreement, obviously, and now we have what you call a shameful release. Obviously.

As for FSM and others, they work with composers all the time when it comes to composers who show a very strong interest in seeing their music released. Those times when the composer isn't involved (a la Jerry Goldsmith titles), it is because the composer has no strong interest in seeing these soundtracks released.

Disque Cinemusique? Woops, Delerue is no longer with us, so there's big possibility Clement might have had some trouble involving him.

But I thought you knew all of this. Forgive me.

Obviously. Glad you have all the answers! (So, why did you ask all those questions - unless... you were being rhetorical?) What ever would we do without you?? Oh wait - I think I know the answer to that one.

Amazing how almost a year changes things so dramatically. From Jones' involvement for "the best listening experience possible" to what is now essentially the at least twice bootlegged LP release and the score as it appears on the DVD's isolated music track, complete with volume fluctuations and dropouts. Tell me how lucky we are again...

Hey hey - who the hell said there were volume fluctuations??? (Talk about a presumption!)

And this isn't a bootleg, it's an officially licensed release, which makes it more legit than that DVD rip you might have.

To quote the review on your site:

"The second disc, however, is a mixed bag. Yes, it's the complete score - but as heard in the film. That means, edits and cuts are here"

As heard in the film would mean volume fluctuations. The DVD had them here and there. And since I bought the DVD, my CD of it is "legitimate," whatever that word seems to mean these days. It's just on another medium.

So does anyone know how much Trevor is making off of this?

At this point in time, I'd like to deem this release a Jonathan F. Little Certified Cluster****. Thanks to Trevor Jones for allowing his "personal reasons" to screw over film music fans. Thanks to whoever at Numenorean pissed him off or whatever the hell they did.

Dan, are you getting kickbacks from Mark Banning or something? The countless BUYSUCKSUCKSUCK links on webpages managed by you are making me nauseous. They're your pages and you can link to whoever you want to, but why link to that? They might be the so called "distributor" (actually I'd invent the word antidistributor to describe them) of this release, but that 'store' is the most useless one on the internet. Don't even get me started on their price gouging on both their store prices (e.g. Intrada $15 releases for $20) and on eBay.

No, I don't get kickbacks from Mark Banning. Your inability to count two links (one for the purchasing link, and one in the review) is humorous. ("countless"! lol!) I provided the links because they were kind enough to provide me with the first CD off the presses for review purposes. It's called professional courtesy, something that is misunderstood on this message board.

I'm not familiar with the details, but I'm sure Jones will see SOME money from it. As for the musicians, well, the London Symphony Orchestra doesn't exactly get re-use fees... soo..... none?
