Just ordered this; I wanted the disc for the Airplane! suite most of all. Is the love theme performed in it? Anything else I should know? Thanks in advance.

For starters, the Airplane suite is actually pretty damn good I think. It's faithful to the original. Barry's "Raise The Titanic" and Goldsmiths "The Swarm" are also wodnerfully done and are a joy to listen to. I actually picked this CD up when it came out simply for the Airplane suite, but overall it's a decent disc!

And Bateman's growling brass on 'March of the Lava' from Volcano certainly makes for a better listen than the original soundtrack.

    The Swarm well done?
Volcano better listen than the original?

    Get hearing aids.

    Airplane is ok.
    The Williams stuff is soso.
    Daylight is horrible.
    The Swarm is a joke.
As for Volcano... like I said, get hearing aids if you think this crap is any better than the original.

everyone has their opinion I suppose... You're certainly entitled to your own, but why belittle someone for liking this disc?

Because there is a difference between liking the music and liking piss poor orchestral playing.

Had you two said you liked the music, I could not say anything about that.

But saying that these are well-played is simply mind boggling.
Especially in the case of Volcano where a third rate orchestra is said to have done a better job than a first rate Hollywood ensemble. When the Hollywoodians play badly they still do it better than when the Pragueians play at their best. Blame it on the conductor if you wish. Even the London Symphony Orchestra sounds bored when conducted by Bateman.

I strongly disagree with you Dinko. These particular Prague recordings are respectable enough - at least when compared to the prior atrocities they've foisted on our ears.

As a point of fact, I don't have any particular fondness for Silvestri's Volcano. I did my side by side comparison, and since 'March of the Lava' was the only track I had any passing interest in, I sold the OST because Bateman's rendition had more...pizzazz. This is not a reflection on the competancy of the Hollywood players, simply an interpretive preference of mine. I like the stronger brass presence.

As for the Swarm; the key, I think, to a successful Goldsmith translation here is twofold: the first being the conductor's understanding of how Goldsmith's orchestrations augment his rhythms, and second, the orchestras capacity to keep up. And, in both cases, this performance is remarkably competent. I can only site the opening bars of 'The Bees Arrive' as being particularly weak.

Their performance of the main title from The Towering Inferno, while not as balanced as the original Williams is, again, quite acceptable. Nic Raine has got a handle on the driving rhythm and the string section displays sufficient verve.

All in all, I don't think this release is quite the abomination you make it out to be.
