Fans of Brian Tyler need not hesitate to get this one.

Album opens with a whopping big cue called "Evil Rises."
I feel sorry for the horn players, who must have given themselves a hernia playing this score.

Lots of big crescendos, orchestral outbursts, big brass, screaming horns and all that. Throughout it all, there are several ideas and motifs that connect everything.

Seattle recorded score runs 26 tracks and 48 minutes, with a nice 7 minute end title suite to close things out. Has the same sort of concert hall acoustic that Frailty had, though I don't know if it was recorded in the same locale.

Also a cheeky note from the film's director, who knew his movie was a piece of s-h-i-t. Gotta pay the rent, I guess.

It's not a classic by any stretch, but like I said, if you enkoyed Tyler's previous efforts, this is a no-brainer.

I'm not sure where Frailty was recorded but Darkness Falls was recorded at Saint Thomas Chapel at Bastyr University. It's a gorgeous old church with very high ceilings. It nicely captures the sound of the orchestra and its great to hear a live orchestra and choir perform there. Michael Giacchino recorded his four Medal of Honor scores there as well as many of his other video game scores. Here is a photo from the MoH: Frontline recording session. http://www.michaelgiacchino.com/pics/mohfl04.jpg

The score for Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb was recorded there as well which sound engineer Steve Smith beautifully recorded. Hear two clip from that score here http://www.lucasarts.com/products/indiana/supplies.html

Here's a quote from Ryan's review that I really dug....

"Personally I've always gravitated towards horror film music, which is really just action music with a bad attitude and a dash of supernatural flavor."

Thanks for summing up my feelings on good horror scores, I think that is a really memorable quote. Mucho gracias for mentioning this score which I had no intention of bothering with, since I thought 'BT'(glad he dumped the trendy handle!) was a techno tuner, and nothing more.

Off to rent FRAILTY(since JJH mentions it so often) and pick up this album, thought I'd send some kudos your way guys....

Glad to know you took something away from my review other then a headache

Oh, BT and Brian Tyler are not the same person. That seems to be a common misperception. BT is Brian Transeau. Brian Tyler had nothing to do with THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, though some movie databases to mix that up.

It's funny that you bring this up because on the official Frailty Web Site it mentions in Tyler's bio that he composed music for 'The Fast and the Furious.' They messed it up there as well.

Then you can see how one could mix up all these BT's!
Give me the olden traditional names like Johnny W, and Gerrald G any day

Speaking of great horror scores recorded in Seattle, if you can, check out Parodi/Fair's awesome little gem, The Eighteenth Angel. I think it was basically the same recording crew, and even the same venue, used as in the above mentioned scores - this one is a nice little bit of Newton Howard chorus and Silvestri-esque action for orchestra and two choirs. Fun stuff, a real find.

    Best,
    Sean

    Then either:
    1) I was dreaming.
    2) I was on crack.

because I seem to remember reading the Fast and the Furious end titles and seeing something about "Additional music by Brian Tyler".
(never having done crack, option 1 is the most likely)

This is one big monster of a score and it just gets me that much more excited to see what he did with the score for William Friedkin's upcoming The Hunted and Children of Dune.

There is some other great stuff from Tyler for people looking to hear more of him, including The 4th Floor,Vampires:Los Muertos,Plan B,Last Call,Frailty and of course Six-String Samurai.
