Topic: Williams concerts in Chicago: Subscription only?!!

It seems that ttickets for the John Williams concerts with the Chicago Symphony later this year are available only as part of a subsciption package. What's this? If I'm from out of town but want to come see a high profile concert with the CSO I have to buy a subscription to a series of concerts I can attend only if I plan to be visiting Chicago?I hope I'm wrong about this and that individual tickets will become available but as of now I'm locked out of a concert I'd like to attend due to an inflexible ticket policy. I know symphony orchestras are struggling and John Williams is a great marquee act which which to attract subscribers. But it makes no sense for people like me who will come in from out of town to buy a whole series package for only one performance.

I doubt tickets are only part of a subscription package.Typically these are concerts available to regular subscribers in packages, hence the "Subscription" category.
As far as I know, all tickets are available to all who care to pay.

Currently tickets for this concert do not appear to be on sale.
They should become available by the summer I would assume.Once they become available for sale, the webpage on which the concert is listed will be updated to include an online button titled "Choose Seat and Cost".
You can see that button at the bottom of this page: http://www.cso.org/sat_performdetail.taf?eventid=4095
Clicking on that, takes you to a page where you can choose the number of tickets you want, the seats, etc.
From what I've been able to see so far, because regular series subscribers pay a lot of money in advance, they simply get an earlier opportunity to reserve tickets.
Tickets for the 'general public' typically become available a month or two later.Note that for the Williams concert, they don't even have the program up. http://www.cso.org/sat_performdetail.taf?eventid=5115
Visit the page occasionally and you'll see the update eventually.

Thanks, Dinko. I'd hate to miss out on this since I'm so close to Chicago.

I'm close to Chicago too and the last Williams concert I saw was in 1979. Is it one concert or multiple concerts?

Just so everybody is aware, there are NO tickets on sale yet for ANY concerts in the CSO's 2003-2004 season. They don't begin selling inidividual tickets for the new season until some time in August, but (as Hal and Dinko have pointed out) subscriptions for the season are already on sale. And to answer Lou's question, Williams is doing three concerts in Chicago in November (unless something changes). The first one is on Friday, November 28, and will apparently be Williams conducting selections from a variety of "Movie Music Classics." The other two concerts are on Saturday, November 29, and Tuesday, December 2, and both of those will apparently be all-Williams concerts.
I'm going to try to go to two of them (the classics program and one of the all-Williams programs), but it'll all come down to money, I suppose. I saw Williams with the CSO in the summer of 1999, and I'm looking forward to another go.

Well, I posted this thought on the FSM board but got no response. so here I'll pose it again - for anyone in the Chicago area and planning on attending one ofthe 3 Williams concerts, would you want to meet up and chat before or after? We could consider it a mini-convention for film score fans. I live right downtown here in Chicago so I know there are plenty of places to meet n' greet! Let me know what you think!

Man, I would kill to go to those concerts. Well, maybe not actually kill.
But I'm only 3 hours away, so it's a quick drive.
Heck, if I can jump in a car at 7:30 at night, and drive straight until about 40 miles from the Mississippi river to see a stupid meteor storm (which didn't show up), and then drive straight back home, I think I can make Chicago.

If I have money.

HAL,Just so you know, you are not alone in your dilemma. They're doing the same thing here in Pittsburgh for his concerts with the Pittsburgh Symphony Pops in June, I believe.

I just thought it would be prudent to let everyone know that I looked through all the various subscription packages at the CSO's web site, and the Friday Williams concert is not included on any of them. So no one will be booking seats in advance for it.Kirk

I thought this would be a good time to bring this topic back up front, since the CSO has announced the programming for these concerts...Friday, November 28, 2003, 8:00 PM
Suite from Star Wars
Suite from Harry Potter
March from Raiders of the Lost Ark
"Flight to Neverland" from Hook
Theme from Jurassic Park
Theme from Jaws
Two pieces from Superman
"Adventures on Earth" from E.T.But the REAL pièce de résistance is the other two concerts:
Saturday, November 29, 2003, 8:00 PM
Tuesday, December 02, 2003, 7:30 PM
Concert music; music for film
Concerto for Horn (CSO Commission, World Premiere)I should be buying my tickets for the Friday and Saturday concerts in the next few days.

Who else is going?

I wish I could go to that concert. I´ll be attending, though, this weekend´s concerts at the Hollywood Bowl.
A "Grand Suite" from Star Wars with James Earl Jones as narrator featuring music from all five Star Wars films will make it´s debut there, JWFan reports.

Hey Kirk, I think my wife and I will be attending - were you able to get tickets yet or do you have the subscription deal? I used to subscribe to the CSO and was involved in their volunteer group, but knda fell away after been disenchanted with their internal politics. I really would like to find a way to get tickets for this if I can - perhaps we can all meet up then!

Frank,I just got my tickets for the November 28th performance today. I don't subscribe because I live in the suburbs and I don't think I could make it downtown often enough to make it worth it (though I would love to). I also bought tickets to a concert where the CSO will be premiering a new commission from Lalo Schifrin. It's coupled with the Symphonie espagnole by Edouard Lalo...I wonder if Schifrin gets that a lot.

So not being one to go downtown too often, I don't know about the best places to meet up. What do you recommend?
I'm still planning on going to one of the other concerts, but I'm trying to coordinate it with a few other friends, so I haven't bought tickets yet.

OK, Kirk, I just got my tickets for the Friday show, terrace seats, which put us behind the orchestra staring right at Williams himself as he conducts. I do plan on getting tix for the Saturday show if possible - have you purchased those yet?
As for places to meet, there is a Bennigan's on the block before the CSO hall, but even better is the Russian Tea Room, just around the corner from the hall.
